About the role
Join Multnomah County as a Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to lead our transition from on-premise servers to a modern cloud architecture. We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator with practical working knowledge in both Azure cloud and either Snowflake or with Tableau Server, Power BI Server, and SSRS Server. This role ensures our data systems are secure, optimized, and future-ready while mentoring the team through our cloud evolution.
Responsibilities
- Manage SQL servers and databases daily, ensuring adequate space and proper configuration for team use.
- Lead the redesign and migration from on-premise data storage to modern cloud technology, including Azure and Snowflake.
- Design backup and recovery plans to protect data and ensure quick restoration if needed.
- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks to optimize system efficiency.
- Mentor IT staff on complex coding problems and new database tools.
- Install software updates and patches to maintain security and stay current with technology trends.
- Collaborate with project teams to migrate business intelligence data from on-premise SQL Servers to Snowflake.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience and 5 years of experience in database administration (or 9 years of qualifying training/experience).
- Advanced knowledge of Azure Cloud (Azure SQL Managed Instance, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps, Azure Boards, etc.).
- Advanced experience with Business Intelligence Data Marts, Data Warehousing, including design and best practices.
- Advanced experience working with developers to build ETLs for loading data for reporting.
- Advanced knowledge of database logging tools (e.g., Idera, RedGate Monitor, Splunk).
- Working knowledge of BI reporting platforms (Tableau Server, Power BI Report Server, SSRS) and their functionality.
- Advanced knowledge in installing, performance tuning, maintaining, securing, and administering on-premise MS SQL Server and cloud environments.
- Working knowledge of MS Integration Services (SSIS) environment administration.
- Working knowledge of security, authorization, and authentication in Microsoft Active Directory and Azure Entra ID.
- Working knowledge of MS SQL Server and Azure cloud backup and recovery design and implementation.
- Basic knowledge of networking, firewall concepts, Microsoft Windows Server administration, SAN/NAS storage, and virtualization (Hyper-V/VMWare).
- Basic knowledge of MS Windows Server high availability technologies.
- Advanced knowledge of RDBMS management tools, including MS SQL Server Management Studio.
- Working knowledge of Transact-SQL (T-SQL), including stored procedures, query plans, functions, views, indexes, and triggers.
- Working knowledge of database modeling, data conversion, and ETL tools (e.g., SSIS).
- Basic knowledge of administrative scripting (C#, WMI, PowerShell, Rs Utility, MSBuild).
- Ability to pass a criminal records check.
