Senior Database Administrator

About the role

Highly skilled SQL Server Database Administrator with extensive experience in designing, implementing, installing, and managing complex large-scale database environments. This role assists with the day-to-day support of all AmTrust SQL servers and databases, administering and supporting SQL servers and databases within the organization (On-Prem and Azure). You will work with the DBA team to support all lines of business and departments with their specific or customized SQL solutions, provide support and training to other team members, and uphold AmTrust’s mission, vision, and values.

Responsibilities

• Install and configure SQL Server instances on a cluster environment.
• Create and manage Always-On Availability Groups (AG) for critical databases between datacenters to ensure High Availability and Disaster Recovery (DR).
• Troubleshoot and resolve Cluster issues, Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC), failover modes, and read-only replicas.
• Implement, monitor, and maintain housekeeping and optimization jobs, ensuring peak performance of all SQL Servers, including Performance Tuning recommendations.
• Use T-SQL and PowerShell scripting, along with monitoring tools, to track database health and performance.
• Collaborate with application developers, system and network admins to ensure seamless database operations.
• Manage database elements, including creation, alteration, deletion, and copying of schemas, databases, tables, views, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, and integrity constraints in accordance with Software Change Management processes.
• Monitor database and replication servers for resource utilization, handle testing, reporting, backup/restore, and manage database distribution, security, and access requirements.
• Provide support for specific or customized SQL solutions for On-Prem and Azure, including PostgreSQL, and ensure all SQL Servers operate within a secure environment meeting AmTrust’s disaster recovery requirements.
• Implement, maintain, and review security and data access rights within AmTrust’s SQL Server environment to support audits, set up access privileges, and create/maintain user profiles for database access.
• Perform backup and recovery, configure database parameters, and provide support for non-relational database systems like MongoDB, Cosmos DB, and Redis.
• Perform month-end close processes, patching, and other maintenance outside normal business hours as part of on-call support.
• Maintain SQL security standards and policies, and provide training and knowledge transfer to other team members.
• Own strategy around the data warehouse, including system monitoring, capacity planning, disaster recovery, and architecture.
• Monitor and optimize query performance and data processing workflows within Azure Synapse Analytics to meet business requirements.
• Design and architect end-to-end analytics solutions in Azure Synapse, including orchestrating data pipelines to load data efficiently in Synapse dedicated SQL Pool.
• Work with Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Flow, Azure Functions, and Databricks.
• Perform other functionally related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Technology.
• 8+ years of hands-on experience working with database technologies (Microsoft SQL Server 2016, 2019, 2022, Azure, PostgreSQL, MongoDB).
• Proven experience in managing SQL Server Always-On Availability Groups for High Availability and Disaster Recovery.
• Proficiency in backup and recovery, SQL query optimization, data warehousing concepts, and performance tuning.
• Ability to analyze SQL Server performance metrics (CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network) and query store to identify performance bottlenecks and optimize queries, indexes, and execution plans.
• Expert knowledge of SQL monitoring software (Quest Foglight, SolarWinds DPA, SQL Diagnostic Manager).
• Understanding of relational, virtualization, Data Lake/Warehouse, In-Memory, and Azure Cloud Data Platforms, along with AWS and GCP.
• Experience with logical and physical data modeling.
• Experience in designing and architecting end-to-end analytics solutions in Azure Synapse.
• Experience with Azure Data Lake, Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Flow, Azure Functions, and Databricks.

Preferred Qualifications

• A master’s degree can serve as a substitute for some experience.
• Certified Microsoft Database Administration or ITIL Certification.
• Azure DP-300 Certification.

Pay

The expected salary range for this role is $87,600.00 - $125,000.00. Salaries are based on candidate skills, experience, education, training, the scope and responsibilities of the role, as well as market and business considerations.
