Senior Custodian (NYHELP Program)

This position is part of the NY HELPS program, which temporarily waives the civil service examination requirement. Individuals appointed through this program will transition to competitive class status without needing to take a future exam.

About the role

Mohawk Valley Community College is seeking a Senior Custodian in the Facilities and Operations Department. The Senior Custodian supervises cleaning, maintenance, and heating activities of a building or buildings, overseeing all custodial work and staff.

Responsibilities

• Performs and supervises cleaning activities
• Assigns tasks to subordinates and provides instructions on the use and safety of cleaning supplies, materials, and equipment
• Makes minor carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and other building repairs
• Requisitions supplies and ensures their proper use
• Performs a variety of custodial activities as required
• Operates a computer to manage and disperse information
• May supervise or participate in the firing of steam boilers
• May clean or supervise the cleaning of boilers and fires
• May inspect or monitor boiler systems for defects and problems
• May make necessary boiler system repairs or notify appropriate personnel of needed repairs

Requirements

• Good knowledge of building cleaning practices, supplies, and equipment
• Good knowledge of operating low-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment
• Working knowledge of computer operation and programs
• Ability to plan and lay out work
• Ability to supervise the work of others
• Dependability and manual dexterity

Qualifications

Either:

• Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma, and two (2) years of experience in building cleaning and maintenance work, or experience in any of the standard mechanical or construction trades; or
• Three (3) years of experience as outlined above

Note: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be prorated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Schedule

• Monday - Friday, 5:30am - 2:00pm
• 40 hours per week

Pay

$39,915 per year
