Senior Cross-Connection Specialist
About the role
This position involves providing lead direction in planning, scheduling, assigning, and reviewing the work of employees engaged in the maintenance of mechanical metering equipment, as well as those directly involved in the administration of EBMUD's backflow prevention and cross-connection program.
Responsibilities
- Planning, scheduling, assigning, reviewing, training, and assisting employees engaged in repairing water meters;
- Maintaining, repairing, and testing backflow prevention devices;
- Inspecting potential cross-connections;
- Providing technical advice to customers and EBMUD personnel concerning backflow programs;
- Performing and overseeing the performance of cross-connection surveys and testing;
- Conducting and overseeing the performance of skilled water meter and backflow device repair work;
- Locating, inspecting, testing, maintaining, and repairing meters and backflow devices in the field;
- Advising consumers on EBMUD cross-connection control ordinance and regulations;
- Maintaining accurate records of cross-connection surveys, inspections, and tests and repairs of backflow devices;
- Maintaining an approved list of outside certified backflow testers;
- Determining, requisitioning, and maintaining a supply of replacement parts and supplies necessary for the repair and testing of backflow devices and water meters;
- Calibrating EBMUD test equipment;
- Ensuring test equipment is properly maintained;
- Coordinating and assisting with large tap authorizations and fire service flushes;
- Contacting customers to plan shutdowns and to schedule backflow device and water meter repairs and testing as assigned;
- May act in the absence of the Meter Repair and Testing Supervisor.
Requirements
- Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalent;
- Three (3) years of experience as a skilled meter mechanic, which has included the adjustment/installation of backflow prevention devices;
- Two (2) years of experience performing cross-connection inspections;
- One (1) year of experience as a Cross-Connection Specialist with EBMUD;
- Must possess and maintain a California approved certificate that demonstrates competency as a backflow prevention device tester;
- Must possess and maintain a California approved certificate that demonstrates competency as a cross connection control specialist;
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record;
- Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class;
- Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and work overtime as needed.
Skills
Broad cross-connection and inspection experience; familiarity with utilities and recycled water operations; excellent customer service skills; a strong background in meter maintenance and testing practices; and the ability to work independently and effectively in the field with minimal supervision.

Pay
The salary range is $10,503 per month increasing to $11,028, $11,579, and $12,158 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.
Schedule
The position requires flexibility to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and may require overtime.
