Senior Crop Accountant
About the role
The Senior Crop Accountant reports to the VP, Crop Finance and supports the financial operations of Palomar’s crop insurance business. Key responsibilities include processing premium payments, managing overpayments and refunds, reviewing agent commission statements, generating reports, and collaborating with various teams.
Responsibilities
- Process and record all crop insurance premium payments, overpayments, refunds, and billing adjustments with accuracy and timeliness
- Reconcile premium, liability, and indemnity activity across internal systems, AIP platforms, and RMA data to ensure financial accuracy
- Review and validate agent commission statements, research discrepancies, and coordinate corrections with agents and internal teams
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules for financial close
- Maintain accurate and organized electronic and paper files for audit readiness and operational efficiency
- Assist with internal and external audits, including RMA compliance reviews, by gathering documentation and preparing required reports
- Generate reports by pulling data from multiple systems (policy admin, accounting, RMA, and internal databases); consolidate and analyze results to support decision making
- Research and resolve financial variances related to premium, commission, or settlement activity; recommend corrective actions
- Support monthly premium reconciliation processes to ensure deadlines are met for financial reporting and RMA requirements
- Collaborate with underwriting, claims, agent services, and finance teams to ensure data integrity and consistent application of accounting procedures
- Participate in process improvements, documentation updates, and cross-department projects to enhance efficiency and accuracy
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or equivalent, Master’s Preferred
- 5-10 years’ of accounting experience – crop, insurance, or agricultural finance industry preferred
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office - Excel (Pivot Tables, Lookups, Formulas), Word, Power Point and Outlook
- Ability to organize, self-prioritize, multi-task and be a self-starter in a fast-paced environment with demanding internal and external deadlines
- Strong interpersonal skills and attention to detail a must

Pay
$70,000-$100,000 + Bonus Potential & Participation in our Competitive Long-Term Incentive (LTI) Program. The above pay range is for all US-based roles based on function and level, benchmarked against companies of similar size and scope.
