Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief Counsel, Litigation & Claims, the Senior Counsel, Litigation & Claims will:

  • Resolve a high volume of active claims and potential claims in the United States and Canada, with over 80% involving insurance broker professional liability (errors and omissions).
  • Analyze new claims and lawsuits, begin factual investigations, identify key participants, document, and determine initial strategies.
  • Review key documents related to the claim, conduct thorough investigations, interview Hub employees knowledgeable about the facts, determine potential exposure, analyze insurer's coverage position, and engage with insurers as necessary.
  • Prepare reports to management on developments, exposure, and potential resolution. Negotiate settlements if appropriate, advise Hub when there is no legal exposure, and manage non-party subpoenas for documents and depositions.
  • Retain and supervise outside counsel when needed for advice or defense of the company, manage outside counsel, enforce litigation management guidelines, and approve invoices. Engage with counsel on strategy, early settlement, and fact development. Participate in mediations, arbitrations, and trials.
  • Train and advise internal clients on avoiding professional negligence and other types of legal liability, develop data regarding the company's errors and omissions experience, identify common trends or specific issues, recommend corrective measures, and advise management on Hub operating companies and the Legal Department.
  • Provide legal support for our business as an insurance broker and address various legal issues arising in servicing clients' insurance needs. Serve as a Legal Department liaison and resource for Claims and other Hub business units. Monitor and report on changes in law impacting Hub.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from a U.S. law school and bar admission in any U.S. state.
  • 5+ years’ professional legal experience at any law firm, insurance brokerage, in-house legal department, or insurance company.
  • Strong knowledge of the insurance industry, especially insurance coverage.
  • Superior written and oral communications skills.
  • Technological skills relating to data analysis and efficient case handling.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle many diverse projects simultaneously.
  • Familiarity with employment, corporate, transactional, and non-solicitation law is a plus.

Department Legal Required Experience
