About The Role

We are looking for a Product Counsel to join our fun, mission-driven, growth-focused team to advise on the intersection of technology, the law, and the financial needs of our customers. The legal team’s mission is to mitigate risk while maximizing growth and our vision is to be trusted advisors to the business. We succeed when employees know when to seek legal advice and integrate legal advice, counsel, and review into the company’s initiatives so they succeed.

You’ll report to AGC, Head of Product, and collaborate to scope a role that meets business needs as the Motive Card product grows and matures.

Responsibilities

  • Counsel the Product team to launch new features for the Motive Card
  • Negotiate all manner of contracts, from customer NDAs to issuer processor and receivables financing agreements
  • Support Sales with training and process to streamline and accelerate the sales cycle
  • Review and help develop compelling yet compliant Marketing content
  • Collaborate with Finance and Risk functions to minimize loss, investigate fraud and create policies and process to reduce it
  • Work cross functionally with your legal peers in privacy, regulatory affairs, IP, and general product counseling on novel issues that arise
  • Stay up to date on industry developments to help your colleagues see around corners
  • Quickly earn the trust of your business partners to become a sought-after advisor to the Motive Card business

Requirements

  • US-licensed and -based attorney with a minimum of 6+ years experience
  • Significant time in-house, with law firm training
  • Experience working on emerging fintech products, especially in the commercial payments space (not crypto)
  • You don’t just know US financial regulations, you can explain to engineers and PMs how to comply with them in a real life product
  • Comfortable making independent decisions in areas of regulatory/contractual ambiguity
  • Roll up your sleeves and do what needs doing with enthusiasm and a sense of humor
  • Oriented towards enabling revenue, but know when to push back
  • Humble, low ego, deep commitment to empowering your colleagues
  • AI-first perspective, with interest in building and leveraging AI-driven tools

Pay

The compensation range for this position will depend on where you reside. Motive uses three geographic zones to determine pay range:

  • San Francisco, California: $175,000—$241,000 USD
  • U.S. metropolitan areas (Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City Area, Seattle, Washington D.C.): $153,000—$210,000 USD
  • Other locations in the United States: $153,000—$210,000 USD

For certain roles, total compensation may include restricted stock units.
