Senior Controls System Engineer

R&P is a small-sized defense contractor providing Engineering, Logistics, Program Management, and Technical Services to government clients. We are seeking a Senior Controls System Engineer to join our fast-paced team, focusing on the design, development, integration, and validation of advanced electronic control systems for maritime applications.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, integrate, and validate advanced electronic control systems for maritime applications, leading complex engineering efforts and ensuring delivery of high-quality, compliant, and innovative automation and power systems.
  • Specify, design, optimize, adapt, and test electronic control systems to remotely and autonomously control maritime-related processes.
  • Develop technical designs, process diagrams, ladder logic diagrams, and control schematics to implement automation controls according to customer requirements.
  • Configure systems using PLC and HMI techniques.
  • Model, test, and measure output and data to analyze performance or quality issues and develop solutions.
  • Coordinate with customers, sub-contractors, and vendors to manage inputs to design activities.
  • Develop software for feedback control systems using CAN bus protocol.
  • Meet daily with team members to identify and remove roadblocks.
  • Develop electrical power generation and power distribution systems for marine applications.
  • Integrate Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Cyber, and Intelligence (C5i) systems into vessels.
  • Approve wiring routing tables with passthrough information, pinout identification, wire type, connector part numbers, and label descriptions in MS Access.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with specifications, drawings, and contract terms, including ABS standards within assigned SWBS section.
  • Partner with the Weight Manager to monitor and control system weight to meet design targets.
  • Approve Engineering Change Notifications to formally release design data.
  • Initiate Engineering Change Requests when improvements or errors are identified.
  • Redline released designs for junior engineers to incorporate into the controlled design.
  • Develop engineering deliverables in accordance with engineering processes, ensuring safe and fit-for-purpose outputs, and present material for life-cycle reviews.
  • Approve drawings using Product Life Cycle Management system following company workflow.
  • Address Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) on time to support production readiness.
  • Issue Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) on time to implement new designs and changes.
  • Partner with quality teams to troubleshoot installation issues, determine root cause, and recommend solutions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by creating work instructions for best practices and mentoring/training junior designers.
  • Review peers' work for compliance with engineering standards.
  • Work autonomously and unsupervised, leading a small team of engineers and designers on complex tasks.

Requirements

  • BS degree preferred in Electrical Engineering or a similar field.
  • 10+ years of control system design experience, including feedback control systems using CAN bus protocol.
  • Desired marine electrical knowledge covering power generation, power distribution, navigation, communication, video, equipment installations, junction box installation, cable routing, cableways and penetrations, and lighting systems.
  • Experience with MS Office, BC Dynamics, AutoCAD, Zuken, Python, PDM, PLM, MRP, SharePoint, and Access.
  • Ability to work unsupervised efficiently and effectively.
  • Excellent communication, teamwork, leadership, conflict management, and critical thinking skills.
  • 5 years of program management experience desired.
  • Ability to serve as lead technical advisor to achieve scope, cost, and schedule targets.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work on complex configurations.
  • Understanding of compliance with AS9100 and Mil-STD-973.
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to security clearance requirements.
