Responsibilities

  • Performs forensic assignments within the field of mechanical engineering expertise based on a scope of work and budget agreed upon by the client.
  • Investigates incidents to determine if they resulted from mechanical failure of equipment.
  • Inspects sites, products, and equipment; performs analysis of commercial and non-commercial equipment; determines cause and origin of damage; conducts mechanical engineering analysis and calculations; prepares sketches as required.
  • Conducts analyses including equipment and machinery design and failure, industrial incidents, product failure and liability, and materials analysis.
  • Prepares oral and written reports documenting analysis, extent of loss, associated repair scope, and/or recommended remediation steps.
  • Provides expert opinions and testimony in deposition and trial as required.
  • Manages multiple projects and collaborates with other experts as needed.
  • Applies equations, techniques, tools, and resources to analyze issues.
  • Maintains knowledge of and ability to understand industry and safety standards.
  • Initiates, develops, and maintains client relationships.
  • Takes technical photographs, conducts investigations, documents on-site conditions, oversees testing, and reviews documentation.

Requirements

  • High level of analytical skill with attention to detail.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, perform analysis, and draw valid conclusions in accordance with industry practices and the scientific method.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with internal and external clients.
  • Ability to research scientific and technical principles and apply them to specific cases.
  • Proficiency in reading, understanding, and analyzing expert reports.
  • Clear and coherent writing skills for reports, proposals, correspondence, budget estimates, and other technical documents.
  • Efficient response to inquiries from internal and external clients.
  • Capability to present information effectively to management, clients, public groups, or others as required.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering or equivalent from an accredited program.
  • Advanced degrees are highly valued.
  • F.E. exam completed.
  • P.E. licensure or ability to complete PE license within one year.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience, including knowledge of machinery and equipment.
  • Additional experience is beneficial.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required; local travel by personal vehicle, including transportation of tools and instruments, is necessary.

Physical Demands

  • Work is performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (e.g., incident sites).
  • Requires standing, walking, sitting, climbing, bending, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, talking, and hearing.
  • May lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must maintain sharp focus and alertness for inspections, client interactions, report preparation, and potential testimony.
  • Clear vision and depth perception are necessary.

Schedule

  • Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch.
  • Flexible scheduling is allowed to meet clients' needs, with occasional odd hours required due to the nature of investigations.
  • Position is salaried with exempt FLSA status.

Travel Requirements

This position requires up to 25% overnight travel, though most inspections are completed locally.
