Stantec is seeking Senior Construction Inspectors (or Transportation Engineering Technicians of varying levels) to join our growing Transportation team in Virginia or Maryland. About the role

Your role is to work with general supervision on average-sized projects and as a team member on larger projects under the guidance of a Construction Manager. You will be responsible for daily inspection efforts on multiple complex, large, or diverse projects to ensure contractor operations comply with project plans, specifications, and contract documents. You will prepare sketches and assemble data for the Responsible Charge Engineer to utilize when making changes to the project.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a client representative to ensure quality control and contractor compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction projects of varying complexity.
  • Coordinate work and inspections with contractor representatives, client personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor contractor operations to ensure compliance with contract terms and specifications.
  • Review and monitor contractors’ plans of operation; advise contractors of violations and recommend adjustments.
  • Generate reports of inspection findings, notify Construction Management of significant problems, and complete documentation for satisfactory completion of inspections or tests.
  • Prepare and review reports for entry into Site Manager/ProjectWise, documenting materials, test reports, pay quantity records, progress schedules, and monthly estimates.
  • Manage deadlines, prioritize assignments, and prepare final documentation for the closeout process.
  • Inspect construction features, measure dimensions, and calculate quantities.
  • Examine construction materials to ensure they meet specifications.
  • Review plans, specifications, RFIs, submittals, construction schedules, shop drawings, and pay applications (QA/QC).
  • Tabulate monthly quantities for contractors' monthly payment estimates.
  • Train and/or mentor less experienced staff in company procedures, standards, and software.
  • Perform work order development, investigations, and analysis of Notices of Intent.
  • Evaluate and monitor progress schedules and perform work order analysis.
  • Verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations using survey and field engineering equipment.
  • Independently coordinate and direct all phases of construction inspection for projects complicated by extensive traffic control, public sensitivity, environmental challenges, or significant coordination with property owners, utility companies, or government representatives.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in VDOT procedures and policies.
  • Basic skills in math, drafting, and science.
  • Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
  • Proficiency in Site Manager, ProjectWise, and project material certifications.
  • Initiative in task coordination and team collaboration.
  • Good driving record and valid driver’s license.
  • Effective communication of project issues with contractors, project teams, and clients.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of roadway, structure, and bridge construction, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation methods, materials, standards, and specifications.

Qualifications

  • Technical degree/diploma/certificate or equivalent in a related field; or equivalent combination of education and construction experience.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record.
  • Position primarily requires fieldwork, which may include exposure to the elements, including inclement weather.

Pay

  • Locations in MN, OH, VT, & various CA, ME, NY, VA areas: $71,800.00 - $104,100.00 annually.
  • Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD & various CA, NJ, VA areas: $79,000.00 - $114,500.00 annually.

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Final compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. Certain roles are bonus-eligible. Part-time compensation is pro-rated based on agreed working hours.
