Senior Construction Inspector

Infrastructure Engineering Inc's (IEI) New York Office is looking for an experienced Senior Construction Inspector to join our team working with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at JFK Airport. We are a multi-disciplinary prime consulting firm delivering design engineering, program management, construction engineering, and inspection services. Responsibilities

• Perform construction inspection activities throughout all phases of the project.
• Prepare daily narratives, special inspection reports, time-and-material records, and unit price documentation.
• Identify potential extra work issues and notify the Resident Engineer/Assistant Resident Engineer; prepare extra work estimates and supporting documentation.
• Review plans for constructability and provide comments.
• Review contractor payment requests and recommend reasonableness.
• Coordinate inspections at multiple work locations.
• Perform quality assurance inspections of completed work.
• Verify compliance with safety requirements.
• Coordinate work activities, closures, and utility shutdowns with JFK Operations and Maintenance staff.
• Work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
• Administer portions of the contract, including preparing change orders and pay requests.
• Oversee daily activities of inspection personnel, ensuring detailed and thorough daily activity reports; accept or reject contractor’s work.
• Ensure construction materials are acquired from approved sources.
• Coordinate, inspect, review, and affirm results of tests on construction materials such as concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and soils.
• Maintain awareness of safety and health requirements; ensure compliance with applicable regulations and contract provisions for public and personnel protection.
• Ensure the contractor adheres to the Occupational Health and Safety Act, environmental, and Waste Management requirements.
• Keep the Resident Engineer informed of conditions that could result in contract change orders or delays; assist in proactively resolving these situations.
• Supervise/perform quality assurance inspections to achieve compliance with contract plans and specifications on treatment facility, highway, and bridge construction.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management (desired).
• Minimum of 10 years of experience inspecting construction work varying in size (projects ranging from $500K to $5M+) and complexity (multiple crews and crew sizes per shift).
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge, including passing security threat assessments, fingerprint-based criminal history records checks, and background investigations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience preparing daily reports, inspection reports, and contract documentation.
• Experience reviewing contractor payment applications and documenting extra work.
• Ability to coordinate with contractors, Resident Engineers, and facility personnel.
• Working knowledge of construction safety requirements.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Willingness to work weekends and night shifts when required.

Skills

• Knowledge of industry standards and specifications.
• Extensive knowledge of standards, specifications, physical characteristics, and properties of roadway, structures, drainage, and utility systems construction materials, as well as approved testing methods and equipment.
• Skilled in detecting discrepancies in plans, materials, and construction methods; implementing corrective action.
• Skilled in planning and scheduling inspection activities.

Working Conditions

• IEI will provide a company vehicle for fieldwork (acceptable driver’s record required).
• Must be physically capable of walking and moving about on construction sites, have good hand-eye coordination, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
• Occasionally exposed to wet/humid conditions, in-progress construction hazards (fumes, toxic chemicals, risk of electric shock, vibration), dust, asphalt, and concrete.
• May require extra hours, including weekends, to manage intense construction work or unexpected situations.
• Spends time working indoors to review blueprints and write reports.
• Usually works a standard 40-hour work week (daytime or nighttime).
• Works in outside weather conditions.

Work Environment

The work environment involves outdoor settings in various weather conditions, possibly for extended periods. The office environment is moderately noisy, while construction sites are often loud, requiring hearing protection.
