Senior Construction Inspector

About the role

Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (IEI) Chicago Office is seeking an experienced Senior Construction Inspector to join our team. We are a leading engineering firm known for quality, responsiveness, and a proven track record of success as a Prime civil engineering firm.

Essential Duties/Functions And Responsibilities

• Effectively make decisions concerning work in progress, solving field and office problems, and supervising others.
• Read, analyze, and interpret complex technical documents.
• Administer portions of the contract, including preparing change orders and pay requests.
• Coordinate, inspect, review, and affirm results of tests on construction materials such as concrete, asphalt, aggregates, and soils.
• Ensure construction materials are acquired from approved sources.
• Ensure contractors adhere to Occupational Health and Safety Act and environmental and Waste Management requirements.
• Work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
• Inspect and approve maintenance of traffic, including lane closures.
• Inspect deep excavation and underground structures.
• Keep the Resident Engineer informed of conditions that could result in contract change orders and/or delays and assist in proactively resolving these situations.
• Maintain an awareness of safety and health requirements and assure compliance of applicable regulations and contract provisions for the protection of the public and construction project personnel.
• Observe work in all stages of progress to ensure conformance with standards, safety, and other applicable regulations and contract requirements; assess construction methods against industry standards; review workmanship and sequence of operations; monitor project schedules.
• Oversee daily activities of inspection personnel and see to it that they complete detailed and thorough daily activity reports; accept or reject the contractor’s work.
• Review and comment on standards, plans, specifications, special provisions, manufacturers' material specifications, applicable regulations, and technical and constructability issues.
• Supervise/perform quality assurance inspections to achieve compliance with contract plan and specifications on all phases of treatment facility, highway, and bridge construction.
• Use initiative and exercise independent judgment; draw valid conclusions and project consequences of decisions and recommendations; meet deadlines.

Qualifications

• Minimum 6 years of experience with deep excavation, support of excavation, utilities, roadway, waste treatment facilities, highway, and/or bridge construction experience.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering / Construction Management or equivalent; or NICET III/NICET IV Certification.
• Extensive knowledge of standards, specifications, physical characteristics and properties of roadway, structures, drainage and utility systems construction materials, and the approved methods and equipment used in making physical tests of construction materials.
• Knowledge in industry Standards and Specifications for different agencies (the DEP, DOT, DDC etc.).
• Skilled in detecting discrepancies in plans, materials, and construction methods and processes, and in implementing appropriate corrective action.

Working Conditions

• Company vehicle for fieldwork with acceptable driver's record.
• Physically capable of walking and moving about on the construction sites, have good hand-eye coordination, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds.
• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions or in-progress construction hazards: fumes, toxic chemicals, risk of electric shock, and vibration.
• Often works around dust, asphalt, and concrete.
• Sometimes needs to put in extra hours, including weekends, to keep up with intense construction work at times and deal with unexpected situations and accidents.
• Sometimes works indoors to review blueprints and write reports.
• Usually works a standard 40-hour workweek either daytime or nighttime.
• Usually works in outside weather conditions.
