Senior Community Health Worker & RA

The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is an independent, non-profit biomedical research organization located in Torrance, California. Researchers across dozens of laboratories are working to unravel the mysteries of heart and kidney disease, cardiac complications in newborns, chronic lung disease, skin cancer, sickle cell disease, disorders of the autoimmune system, and more. Many projects are collaborative, involving experts from different specializations. Discoveries have prevented blindness in newborns, enabled premature infants with fragile lungs to breathe, and allowed children with rare, often fatal diseases to grow up healthy and strong.

Responsibilities

• Senior community health worker
  • Screening: Ask youths and their families about their symptoms
  • Goal setting: Work with families to set goals and priorities to address symptoms
  • Health education: Educate families on ways to address symptoms
  • Connection: Help connect families to community resources
  • Monitoring: Regularly update a patient list to track symptoms, goals, health education, and community connections over time
• Research assistant
  • Data entry: Ensure charting in the medical record, research data, and the patient list are accurate
  • Consent: Ask families for permission to use the information you collect for research to improve care
  • Feedback: Ask families for feedback on how to improve services
  • Understanding: Participate in regular reviews of the information you collect to improve care
• Other duties as may be assigned

Requirements

• Bilingual or at least advanced English and Spanish (able to converse with low literacy English- and Spanish-speaking families about medical and behavioral health)
• Lived and/or work experience with under-resourced, English- and Spanish-speaking populations with Medicaid/Medi-Cal insurance or uninsured

Qualifications

Desired but not required:

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
• High school graduate
• Lived and/or work experience with:
  • Youths with mental and behavioral health challenges such as depression, PTSD, special needs such as autism
  • Health care navigation
  • Health education
  • Working in a team
  • Research projects in public health, health services, psychology, or related fields, especially with under-resourced communities
