About the Role
The Senior Commercial Loan Underwriter evaluates AG, Commercial Business, and Real Estate loan requests, performing a variety of duties to assess creditworthiness and manage risk. This role involves analyzing financial information, conducting credit investigations, and making discretionary recommendations to support the loan process.
Responsibilities
- Analyze commercial loan applications to determine eligibility and confer with Loan Officers to assess client needs.
- Request additional information as needed and attend client meetings to provide credit expertise.
- Analyze credit and financial information (e.g., credit reports, tax returns, financial statements) to determine credit risk.
- Enter financial data into programs to generate ratios, assess creditworthiness, and ensure compliance with loan terms.
- Generate cash flow projections, reconcile and interpret financial ratios, and perform comparative, trend, and market analysis.
- Conduct stress-testing and compare liquidity/profitability metrics with industry benchmarks.
- Prepare clear, concise written analysis identifying repayment sources, key risks, and mitigating factors for credit authorizations.
- Recommend credit approval requirements, including financial covenants, monitoring provisions, and accurate credit grading.
- Maintain current knowledge of Bank underwriting guidelines, policies, and regulatory requirements for commercial lending.
- Assist Loan Officers in preparing credit extension memo updates and interface with internal departments and committees.
- Complete annual term loan reviews to assess borrower repayment ability, covenant adherence, and collateral monitoring.
- Perform other work-related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Established knowledge of financial accounting theory, loan structuring, and commercial products/services.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports and legal documents.
- Advanced analytical, problem-solving, and credit quality skills, including financial statement spreading and cash flow analysis.
- Proven ability to interpret and discuss analytical data to make credit recommendations to Senior Management.
- Proficiency in applying mathematical concepts (fractions, percentages, ratios) to practical situations.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently and accurately.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Windows-driven programs.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex financial information.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and deliver work on time without close supervision.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and manage internal/external customer relationships.
Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in Ag Business, Finance, Business Administration, or Accounting; or five years of related work experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to sit; occasionally required to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to ten pounds.
