Summary

The Senior Clinical Coding Specialist at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center is responsible for accurate coding of diagnoses and procedures, training new employees, and assisting with coding functions and compliance reviews.

Major Job Functions

  • Trains and orients new employees to job duties, workflow, policies and procedures, coding and abstracting, encoding software and daily activities
  • Maintains established workflows and recommends policy updates to coding leadership
  • Assists with coding functions (retrospectively and concurrently) to ensure workflow continuity
  • Supports compliance reviews for accuracy of coding and abstraction, including performance monitoring studies
  • Provides feedback and input to coding specialists on performance
  • Develops and implements action plans to improve accuracy and productivity in the coding department
  • Maintains senior coding work queues in EPIC to ensure timely responses within 24 hours
  • Serves as a resource for ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding assignments
  • Supports all coding specialists as needed to promote accurate and quality coding
  • Demonstrates high standards of performance in areas such as ownership, teamwork, communication, and compassion

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) credential required
  • Associate's degree in Health Information Management preferred
  • RHIA/RHIT preferred
  • 5 years ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding experience in a hospital setting
  • 3 years auditing experience and/or lead coder experience preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in English
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT 4 coding
  • Understanding of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, and various medical specialties
  • Coordination and training skills
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Knowledge of medical necessity guidelines and their impact on coding accuracy and reimbursement

Physical Requirements

  • Computer literacy
  • Speech, sight, and hearing required for independent work
  • Long periods of sitting

Licenses and Certifications

  • CCS - American Health Information Management Association
