About the role
Reporting to the Unit Manager, this role will handle commercial claims specific to General Liability and/or Excess General Liability, focusing on SME (small to midsize enterprises) insureds such as franchisees, hotels, and restaurants/entertainment.
Responsibilities
- Investigate and evaluate coverage, liability, risk transfer (e.g., indemnification and tender application), and damages issues.
- Perform claim and coverage evaluation, establish and recommend adequate reserves, and manage litigation.
- Conduct detailed liability and damage analysis to achieve case resolution and optimal claims outcomes.
- Directly handle commercial and business general liability claims.
- Mentor and guide less experienced claim analysts.
- Assist the Unit Manager with departmental problem-solving.
- Manage external relationships, including third-party administrative oversight.
- Serve on company-wide committees and projects as assigned.
- Identify risks and opportunities related to coverage and liability, including risk transfer, tender, and indemnification.
- Monitor, review, and coordinate activities involving commercial and/or personal lines insurance claims, including coverage analysis, reserve establishment, and claim resolution.
- Review loss notices, confirm and interpret policy coverages, establish reserves, and investigate claims involving primary, umbrella, and/or excess policies.
- Manage litigation with Preferred Counsel under Alternative Fee Arrangements or other defense fee structures.
- Pursue and maximize risk transfer opportunities through contracts or insurance policy language.
- Assign and manage defense counsel, expert witnesses, and interactions with peer carriers, including designing and executing defense and indemnity contracts.
- Evaluate liability and damages, and participate in settlement negotiations.
- Ensure proper file setup, reserving, handling, and adherence to company procedures.
- Develop claims handling strategies, including defense coordination, litigation strategy, motion practice, and budget/expense control.
- Record and report specific claims information for financial and statistical records.
- Maintain diary control, investigate, analyze, and report to ensure proper reserves reflect the company’s exposure.
- Report to the Reinsurance Department to assist with reinsurer notices and recovery of amounts exceeding the company’s retention.
- Handle a large volume of diverse and dynamic claims effectively.
- Assist in Due Diligence inquiries as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of seven (7) years of commercial, business, and high-value homeowners claims handling experience or a related field.
- Four-year college degree required or equivalent work experience.
Qualifications
Preferred certifications or licenses: CPCU, SCLA, CCLA, or a New York state adjuster license (required).
