Senior Civil Engineer / Team Leader
About the role
Our US East Design & Delivery Organization (DDO) is seeking a Senior Civil Engineer to join the team in Miami, FL as a Team Leader. This role offers the opportunity to participate in the planning, design, and construction engineering of diverse water, wastewater, utilities, infrastructure, and site-development projects for municipal and private clients, with a focus on linear infrastructure. As Team Leader, you will lead, support, and develop a team of civil engineers focused on linear infrastructure design in Florida, coordinating workload, providing technical oversight, and fostering a collaborative environment.
While based in the US Northeast, you may engage in major projects worldwide, supporting design operations from Australia to Europe. GHD’s linear infrastructure expertise is growing, currently ranked as the #15 firm in Trenchless Technology in North America.
Our hybrid work model combines in-office collaboration and flexibility, requiring three days a week in the office.
Responsibilities
- Manage client relationships, either with guidance from senior colleagues or independently for transactional clients.
- Contribute to a community of practice in a defined area of expertise to build capability and foster innovation.
- Design engineering solutions and validate processes to meet functionality, performance, aesthetic, and cost requirements while adhering to organizational and regulatory standards.
- Draft and evaluate engineering standards and specifications to ensure quality and inform organizational work.
- Monitor and improve health, safety, and environment (HSE) performance, resolving noncompliance with policies and procedures.
- Identify and implement improvements in business practices, working within the organization’s change management program.
- Develop knowledge management policies, best practices, and case studies, and deliver internal knowledge-sharing sessions.
- Assess emerging client needs, identifying causes, barriers, and key stakeholders.
- Build team capabilities through formal development frameworks, including coaching and training in your area of expertise.
- Analyze and develop complex products and solutions, potentially supervising a product development or specialist team.
- Manage a portfolio of projects under senior oversight.
- Draft and complete proposals for complex bid solicitations, requests for proposals, and tenders.
- Recommend technical developments to improve systems, processes, infrastructure, and technology quality.
- Lead and develop a team of civil engineers, including coaching, mentoring, and performance support.
- Coordinate team workload, balance priorities, and align resources with project needs.
- Provide technical leadership and quality oversight for linear water, wastewater, utility, and civil infrastructure designs.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, retention, and succession planning for the Florida linear design team while strengthening client relationships and growing the practice.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering.
- Current Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain one.
- At least 6 years of project experience focused on linear infrastructure, including water, wastewater, utilities, transmission mains, industrial pipelines, energy sector, industrial sites, or grading plans.
- Modeling capabilities.
- Willingness and ability to travel to project sites and client meetings as needed.
- Demonstrated experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating civil engineering teams responsible for linear infrastructure design and project delivery.
- Ability to manage competing priorities, coordinate team workload, and foster collaboration across offices and disciplines.
- Knowledge of Florida linear infrastructure design practices, permitting considerations, and municipal or private utility client needs is preferred.
