About the role

The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible for performing highly complex technical engineering tasks while applying advanced techniques and extending theories and practices in the field. This role focuses on developing technical expertise and mentoring early and mid-career engineering and design staff within our Aviation Team in Philadelphia, PA.

Responsibilities

  • Develop discipline-specific engineering systems, designs, approaches, and solutions for highly complex, large projects.
  • Consult Principal Engineers and Chief Engineers as needed; sign and seal engineering drawings.
  • Set technical direction for specific disciplines on projects, delegate design elements, and retain the most complex, high-value tasks.
  • Mentor early and mid-career staff through on-the-job training; create and deliver training content when requested.
  • Perform engineering studies and design analyses; assist Project Managers in establishing budgets, cost estimates, and project schedules.
  • Develop innovative technical solutions and engineering methods to enhance efficiency, quality, and production.
  • Provide guidance on a project’s overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and policy matters.
  • Ensure Burns’ (and clients’) technical policies and procedures are followed during project execution.
  • Coordinate project designs with other disciplines, including attending project meetings.
  • Review drawings, RFIs, and records of changes; communicate directly with suppliers, contractors, and client representatives.
  • Perform on-site inspections during construction and coordinate design requirements with contractors and equipment suppliers.
  • Oversee scoping, implementation, and design of plans; maintain project deliverable milestones, billing objectives, and activity codes.
  • Assist in proposal writing and client presentations for future work.
  • Act as an expert technical resource with clients and external partners.
  • Participate in professional organizations and client groups to enhance the firm’s technical reputation.
  • Research, apply, and retain design analyses, calculations, engineering methodology, codes, and equipment selection criteria of high complexity.
  • Perform tasks in compliance with Burns’ (and clients’) standards, policies, procedures, and engineering codes.
  • Complete tasks efficiently, accurately, within allotted project hours, and on or before due dates.
  • Complete special duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • Civil 3D experience.
  • Stormwater management/design experience.
