About the role
The Senior Center Assistant provides essential technical and administrative assistance to ensure smooth daily operations across Frederick County senior centers. This role helps create welcoming, engaging environments by developing and sharing informational and recreational opportunities that promote the programs and services offered through the Division of Aging and Independence. The assistant collaborates closely with division staff to support community education, strengthen program awareness, and enhance the overall experience for older adults throughout Frederick County.
Responsibilities
- Perform data entry and maintain client information database
- Assist with day to day operations of senior center(s) and related programs
- Respond to inquiries and requests from seniors and instructors to provide information, resources, and program support
- Perform management duties in the absence of the senior center manager to ensure continuity of operations and service delivery
- Develop, implement, and organize senior center activities under the guidance of supervisory staff to support program goals and participant needs
- Absorb and implement plans, promotions, and events for new satellite locations and special events
- Work independently at centers, virtual and/or satellite locations as needed, assuming leadership roles and responsibilities
- Provide support, safety and security of building and participants, take appropriate action as necessary
- Serve as a division ambassador, promoting division wide services and programs to Frederick County constituents
- Assist with inputting client data, units of service and other information to assure accurate reporting for county, state and federal reports
- Provide general information and assist center participants with registration, orientation, and successful participation in activities
- Assist with day-to-day operations of the congregate meal programs, as needed
- Register members for activities and trips and collect funds to reconcile at the end of the day
Qualifications and Requirements
- A high school diploma or equivalent
- One year of experience in the field of human services
- Possession of a valid automobile license
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Ability to obtain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification & Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification in the first 90 days of employment
- Basic knowledge of laws, regulations, and requirements regarding seniors, veterans, and disability populations
- Knowledge of online video conferencing platforms and how to host meetings
- Basic knowledge of gerontology, seniors, veterans, aging, or disability populations, and issues that affect them
- Ability to collaborate as a team to create and run a program
- Ability to perform data entry
- Ability to think creatively to develop ways to engage virtually/in-person with seniors to make them feel welcome at the center
- Ability to troubleshoot and explain technology
- Ability to work with diverse populations
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Ability to obtain all required certifications
- Skilled in verbal and written communication
- Skilled in organization
- Skilled in customer service
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly sit, walk; frequently lift up to 20 pounds; occasionally reach; rarely drive.
- While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors and occasionally outdoors.
