SENIOR CARPENTER - FIRE EMERGENCY
This announcement is a rebulletin to extend the filing period. The LA County Board of Supervisors has unanimously ratified a Proclamation of Local Emergency in response to the windstorms and wildfires, including the Palisades and Eaton Fires, that have devastated communities across the County. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to assist the County in mobilizing resources and support needed to help our residents recover and rebuild.
Under the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. During this period, your work performance will be assessed and weighted 100%. Those who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to the Senior Carpenter position.
About the Role
Under the direction of a Carpenter Supervisor, this role supervises and participates in the work of a carpentry crew comprised of two to four journey-level and sub-journey-level positions. Positions in this class typically report to a Carpenter Supervisor or other higher-level craft supervisor and are responsible for providing technical supervision to a small crew while performing complex, difficult, or non-routine carpentry assignments in new construction, alteration, and repair work.
Responsibilities
- Assigns, supervises, and inspects the work of a small crew of carpenters, apprentices, and helpers in new construction, alteration, and repair work.
- Lays out, schedules, assigns, and inspects work to ensure conformance to specifications.
- Provides instruction and training in proper methods and processes for carpentry assignments.
- Estimates time, materials, and labor required for projects; may requisition materials, tools, and equipment.
- Orders and maintains a stock of materials and supplies.
- Ensures code requirements, safety regulations, and safe work practices are observed.
- Supervises the maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Maintains records on work projects completed and prepares written reports related to work assignments.
- Performs the work of a journey-level carpenter.
- Drives automotive equipment to and from work sites.
Requirements
- Training and Experience: Five years' experience in carpentry work on buildings, one year of which must have been at the journey-level*.
- License: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions**.
Qualifications
Physical Class 3 - Moderate: This role requires standing or walking most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Special Requirement Information:
- Journey-level experience is defined as possessing the required knowledge, skills, and training to perform a full-range and diversity of work independently and reliably.
- Successful applicants for positions requiring driving must obtain and present a copy of their driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before final appointment. The County will assess whether an applicant’s driving history has a direct or adverse relationship with the specific duties of the job. The license must not be currently suspended, restricted, or revoked.
Schedule
Appointees must be willing to work any shift, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
