Senior Captive Fronting Underwriter

About the role
The Senior Underwriter – Single Parent Captives will be a key member of a high-impact growth area, pursuing the growth of AXA XL’s captive business in the North America region, and providing deal-specific alternative risk expertise to internal and external stakeholders. You will report to the Regional Director, Single-Parent Captives, Americas, and be part of the wider Alternative Risk Solutions unit.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Distribution and Product Line Underwriting teams to identify and pursue new Captive Fronting opportunities through client and broker marketing, pipeline development, stewardship meetings, industry events, and strategic initiatives.
- Work closely with Product Line Underwriters and key internal stakeholders (e.g., Actuarial, Middle Office, Claims, Credit, Legal) to underwrite, structure, and service Captive Fronting placements at a high standard, including negotiating reinsurance commissions, terms, and collateral requirements.
- Serve as the technical expert on Captive solutions for new business and renewal transactions, leading elements such as deal structuring, negotiations, and post-binding activities.
- Partner with the broader account team to develop compelling deal proposals, participate in or lead pitch presentations, and coordinate across multiple coverage lines to deliver a ONE AXA XL solution.
- Ensure all Captive Fronting placements adhere to AXA XL’s Rules, Guidelines, relevant regulations, and compliance standards. Contribute to maintaining accurate portfolio reporting alongside other team members.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships within the Captive ecosystem, including Brokers, Captive Managers, Consultants, TPAs, and other vendors.
- Contribute to internal and external educational efforts related to Captive Fronting, alternative risk transfer, and other relevant AXA XL capabilities to generate new business, foster collaboration, and support cross-sell objectives.
Requirements
- Moderate experience in negotiating, structuring, and executing large, complex Fronting and Multinational programs.
- Deep understanding of Captives, fronting concepts, underwriting processes, and industry governance and compliance standards.
- Broad knowledge of various insurance product lines, with the ability to articulate clear value propositions to internal and external stakeholders to grow a profitable book of business.
- Proven ability to positively influence key stakeholders, including C-suite executives, across various functions and regions.
- University degree or professional insurance qualification in Actuarial, Insurance, Underwriting, Finance, or Legal fields.
Skills
- Direct experience in commercial underwriting of large commercial insurance programs, with a demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly convey strategies, market insights, and complex ideas.
- Ability to work self-directed while being a collaborative team player, supporting the delivery of our value proposition and fostering effective cross-functional relationships.
- Outstanding organizational, time-management, and multi-tasking skills to manage multiple priorities efficiently.
- Willingness to travel (25-30% of time).

Pay
The U.S. base salary range for this position is USD 107,000 – 209,000. Actual pay will be determined based upon the individual’s skills, experience, and location.
