(Senior) Business Development Director

This position is remote / work from home with approximately 40% overnight travel.

About the role

The Director or Senior Director of Business Development will expand the Biology Division business in the US as part of the broader Business Development team. Responsibilities include proactively managing the sales process, following up on leads, filling the pipeline to meet yearly revenue targets, and demonstrating WuXi AppTec’s core values while complying with company policies. This role involves leading and managing a team to achieve division targets, provide exceptional customer service, and build capabilities in the region.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead an engaged and high-performing team, implementing processes, methodologies, and infrastructure that deliver repeatable success.
  • Develop, align, and execute an annual business plan to meet targeted revenue goals.
  • Establish professional rapport with internal functional leaders and market-leading customers to provide feedback on innovative internal processes and market demands.
  • Engage customers regularly to inform the organization of strategic and tactical performance.
  • Create new opportunities and develop new relationships to expand and grow the customer base.
  • Identify key decision-makers relative to WuXi Biology business for potential contact.
  • Daily prospecting to generate new leads.
  • Qualify leads and present opportunities to management and the WuXi Biology technical team.
  • Facilitate business meetings with a clear agenda, proper attendees, focus on opportunity, follow-up, meeting summary, and action items.
  • Project a professional image of WuXi Biology as a solutions provider with clearly articulated messages.
  • Support proposal negotiation to close contracts as defined by supervisor.
  • Serve as the point of contact for WuXi Biology customers; ensure communication channels, proactively identify growth opportunities, and maintain stable relationships with customers and potential customers.
  • Identify issues that could jeopardize partnerships and propose solutions.
  • Maintain excellent relationships with internal business partners at WuXi.
  • Facilitate customer travel to China.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Facilitate and support teamwork to achieve common goals across the WuXi Biology unit and mentor team members on effective techniques and sales strategies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Leads and develops a team.
  • Achieves assigned sales quota, supplier and customer onboarding goals, and profitability expectations.
  • Meets new account acquisition targets.
  • Completes required training and development objectives within the assigned time frame.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in life sciences (preferably in biology or chemistry) with 5+ years of industry experience and at least 7 years of business development experience preferred.
  • Experience leading a team of remote workers.
  • Experience in CRO is required.
  • Prior track record of achievement in positions with significant accountability.
  • Valid driver’s license and passport.
  • PC proficiency.
  • Demonstrated success at managing multiple opportunities and projects simultaneously.

Skills

  • Broad understanding of discovery biology leading to candidate selection and preclinical development.
  • Ability to couple business insight with an understanding of market dynamics and translate business opportunities into growth.
  • Able to close deals by effectively utilizing internal resources.
  • Demonstrated abilities in listening, negotiations, teamwork, and persuasiveness.
  • Coordinates with other BDs or scientific counterparts to provide appropriate solutions to clients.
  • Track record for handling difficult situations and proposing solutions that led to success.
  • Self-starter with a highly flexible and self-motivated approach.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and CRM tools.
  • Proven experience in creating or capitalizing on opportunities leading to successful outcomes, ideally in Business Development.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective listening, dialog, and interactions.
  • Timely communication internally and externally.
  • Independently identifies potential prospects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
  • Assists with territory market analysis, conference planning, and follow-up strategy.
  • Ensures coordination of marketing efforts and good communication with all parties.

Schedule

  • If local: 40% out-of-office travel (day visits, not overnight) to clients plus up to 20% overnight travel to attend conferences.
  • If remote: 25% overnight travel to visit clients and attend conferences.
