About the Role

The City of Fayetteville is recruiting for a Senior Bus Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on all vehicles and equipment in the Transit Fleet, maintain repair records, provide technical assistance to lower-level mechanics, and handle the most complex repairs in the Transit Department.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and assist lower-level mechanics, service aides, and maintenance workers; document employee performance and provide technical leadership.
  • Inspect and diagnose mechanical problems; analyze failures, determine causes, and recommend solutions; perform preventive maintenance and routine repairs.
  • Perform diagnostic activities for gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel system engines; inspect and identify problem areas.
  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical systems components, including ignition systems, computers, alternators, high-voltage power generators, starters, batteries, and hydraulic systems.
  • Diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, chain drives, and propeller shafts; replace or repair faulty parts.
  • Repair, adjust, or replace engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and hydraulic and air brake systems; tune up engines and propane fuel systems.
  • Fabricate and assemble parts for automotive and heavy equipment; modify and repair body panels and chassis parts.
  • Repair and test revenue collection equipment and ADA equipment on vehicles, including mobility lifts/ramps, voice annunciator systems, electronic destination signs, GPS/AVL systems, and video camera systems.
  • Perform vehicle and equipment safety inspections; maintain detailed records of maintenance services; assist in general shop maintenance and cleaning.

Requirements

Any combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical path includes:

  • Three years of journey-level experience performing minor and major equipment repair, including maintenance of diesel, gasoline, and alternative fuel-powered equipment.
  • Completion of twelfth grade, supplemented by specialized training in maintenance and repair of gas, propane, diesel, and other fuel-powered equipment.

Qualifications

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire, a North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and airbrake endorsements; ability to maintain insurability.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months, a North Carolina State Vehicle Safety Inspector’s license.
  • Preferred: Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification for Automotive, Heavy Truck, or Bus.

Schedule

This position involves working varying shifts, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Rotating Saturdays and Sundays are required. Shifts may change based on department needs and can start as early as 3:00 AM or as late as 4:00 PM.

  • Employer-Paid Leave:
    • Vacation Leave: Accrued from the first day of employment, based on years of service and scheduled hours.
    • Sick Leave: Accrued from the first day; full-time employees earn eight (8) hours per month. Accumulates without limits and may count toward retirement service credit.
    • Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year (13 if Christmas falls on a Wednesday).
    • Bereavement Leave: 24 hours per calendar year for mourning or attending a funeral of a family member.
  • Retirement: Participation in the NC Local Governmental Employees’ Retirement System. Employees contribute 6% of gross salary on a tax-deferred basis. Membership begins upon employment for those working 20+ hours per week.
  • Deferred Compensation Plans: Supplemental retirement savings through NC 401(k) and NC 457 plans (administered by Empower). The City contributes 4% of base salary to the NC 401(k) for eligible employees.
  • Cafeteria Plan / Supplemental Benefits: Optional benefits at employee expense via payroll deduction:
    • Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) – Healthcare and Dependent Care (pre-tax).
    • Short-Term and Long-Term Disability Insurance.
    • Optional Life & Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance.
  • Death Benefit: $3,000 in the first year of retirement system contributions. After one year, the benefit equals the highest 12 months’ salary (minimum $25,000, maximum $50,000) at no cost to the employee.
  • Pay Periods: Bi-weekly pay (every other Friday). Benefit deductions are taken over 24 pay periods per year. Direct deposit is required.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP): Confidential guidance on legal, financial, and personal issues for employees and household members at no cost.

Physical Requirements

This position requires the physical ability to lift 50–75 lbs. occasionally, with or without accommodations.
