Senior Building Inspector
About the role
The Building Inspector is responsible for overseeing building inspection activities and operations, including plan review, building inspection, construction site inspections, and permitting. They also enforce building and safety codes, regulations, and standards.
Responsibilities
- Supervise daily building inspection activities and operations
- Administer the effective enforcement of building and safety codes, regulations, and standards
- Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures
- Authorize the issuance of commercial and residential building and construction permits and Certificates of Occupancy
- Review and approve code enforcement actions and reports
- Investigate code enforcement complaints
- Issue violation notices and initiate the abatement process
- Review and approve residential, commercial and industrial building plans to ensure compliance with building codes and municipal codes
- Inspect construction sites as needed to review and resolve technical issues
- Respond to requests for information and complaints
- Provide technical information on interpretation of City codes
- Coordinate department activities with other departments, outside agencies and organizations
- Represent the Department to other City departments, elected officials and outside agencies
- Explain and interpret departmental programs, policies and activities
- Investigate and resolve sensitive, significant, and controversial issues
- Aid in the selection, training, motivation and evaluation of Department personnel
- Provide or coordinate staff training, including safety training
- Correct deficiencies and implement discipline and termination procedures
- Participate in the development and administration of the Department budget
- Forecast funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies
- Assist with monitoring and approval of expenditures
- Prepare and present budgetary adjustments as necessary
- Perform a variety of administrative activities, including employee scheduling, payroll reporting, and work activity reports
- Create reports and forms for the permitting computer system
- Compose, review, edit and approve a variety of reports, including requests for Council action and weekly or monthly reports of departmental activity
- Attend and participate in professional group meetings and continuing education to maintain certification
- Act as Chief Building Official in the absence of the Chief Building Inspector
Requirements
Education and Experience: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Architecture, Engineering or a related field; AND five (5) years plan review and inspection experience, including two (2) years supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications: Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License. Certification as a Combination Dwelling Inspector; additional technical training or certificates may be required.
