What You'll Do

  • Coverage of inspections before, during, and after construction to ensure compliance with safety, structural, and building code regulations.
  • Issuance of violation notices, stop-work orders, and permits for construction.
  • Documentation of inspection results.
  • Effective communication of findings to homeowners and contractors.
  • Coordination with and assistance to other field inspectors.
  • Pick-up of extra inspections as needed.
  • Explanation and clarification of code-related problems with contractor field personnel.
  • Consistent communication and enforcement of standards.
  • Conducting building damage assessment inspections.
  • Investment in continued education.
  • Providing training and mentoring to current inspectors, coordinating and assisting in the selection and training of new staff.
  • Follow-up on phone calls and complaint issues.
  • Handling customer service inquiries for walk-ins regarding code-related issues.
  • Serving as a resource for inspectors in the field.
  • Interpretation and application of standards and regulations for Building, Electrical, Elevator, Mechanical, Plumbing.
  • Participation in ride-alongs with field inspectors for ongoing supervision and feedback on job performance and consistency.
  • Maintenance of awareness of new developments in the field of inspections; incorporation of new developments as appropriate into programs.

What We're Looking For

  • NYS Department of State Code Enforcement certification (required).
  • 10+ Years of experience in building construction, inspection, or a related field (e.g., architecture, engineering).
  • Knowledge of building materials, fire safety standards, and construction methods.
  • Valid New York State driver's license.
  • Possession of New York State approved in-service Code training courses.
  • A thorough understanding of the NYS Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and local zoning laws.
  • Ability to read/interpret construction plans and technical documents, and communicate effectively with the public.
  • Proficiency in using computer applications for record-keeping and permit tracking.
  • Ability to exercise firmness, tact, and impartiality in enforcing regulations.
