Senior Bridge Design Engineer
About the role
Stantec’s New York City office is seeking a highly motivated and driven Senior Bridge Design Engineer to support our growing New York Bridge and Transportation practice. You will work directly with Bridge and Structural Leadership and Project Managers to lead bridge design squads on large-scale infrastructure projects, including bridges, complex highway interchanges, roadway reconstruction, and public spaces.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and review of bridge components ensuring compliance with design criteria, standards, and specifications.
- Provide oversight and technical overview of bridge designs, advise on constructability, and serve as the Package Lead or Engineer-of-Record for bridge design packages.
- Ensure proficiency with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design and local bridge design code requirements.
- Oversee development of project design deliverables, including design criteria, plans, specifications, quantities, and related calculations for Design/Build and Design/Bid/Build environments.
- Monitor progress against design milestones to ensure timely completion of bridge activities.
- Supervise, mentor, and technically guide multiple squads of mid-level and junior bridge engineers as well as CAD designers.
- Lead preparation of design and construction documents in accordance with NYSDOT and other local agency standards.
- Resolve complex technical problems and exercise independent decision-making.
- Review and approve construction documents and provide design support during construction activities (e.g., shop drawings, RFIs, field-related design changes, as-builts).
- Lead design-build pursuits, including development of technical and schematic concepts.
- Coordinate with internal disciplines such as highway, traffic, geotechnical, drainage, and lighting.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance checks on deliverables.
- Lead client development initiatives, including coordinating deliverables, submittals, meetings, and review comments.
Requirements
- Licensed or ability to obtain a Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York and New Jersey.
- Proficient in bridge design and fast-paced bridge design work with the ability to lead multiple squads.
- Knowledge of state-of-the-art bridge design codes, software, and CAD standards to provide direction to engineering teams.
- Proficient knowledge of bridge design and load rating codes, legal, and design requirements in relevant jurisdictions.
- Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
- Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced design environment.
- Hands-on experience with agencies such as NYSDOT, NYCDOT, MTA, and PANYNJ is desired.
Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering from an accredited institution preferred, or Bachelor’s Degree in Civil (Structural) Engineering.
- 10-15 years of experience in bridge design and/or design of transportation structures.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license in New York (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
- Demonstrated experience delivering multi-span steel and concrete bridge projects (new designs and rehabilitation).
- Strong familiarity with relevant DOT standards, design manuals, and standard sheets.
- Experience with NYSDOT standards and local DOT agencies is preferred.
- Ability to proactively identify structural risks and drive innovative solutions.
Pay
- Locations in CO, HI, IL, MD, and various CA, NJ, VA areas: $117,800.00 - $176,800.00 annually.
- Locations in NYC, CA (Bay Area), and NJ (RP): $134,900.00 - $202,500.00 annually.
In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. Certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
