Responsibilities
- Discovery Partnership: Join discovery sessions alongside the BI Product Manager when the consumption experience is central to defining the problem. Observe how users interact with data in their actual environment, contribute a user experience perspective before solutions are attached to problems, and push back when a proposed direction is technically solvable but experientially wrong.
- Experience Design and Power BI Build: Own information hierarchy, navigation, visualization selection, and layout across BI reporting products, and build those experiences in Power BI. Make and defend design decisions based on the decision the report needs to enable, not aesthetic preference. Translate approved concepts into production-ready dashboards and reports, partnering with the Analytics Developer on data availability before making design commitments.
- User and Audience Understanding: Maintain working knowledge of both primary consumer types - operational users who need to act quickly and leadership users who need context and narrative - and design appropriately for each. Test designs with actual users from both categories before work ships.
- Prototyping and Iteration: Prototype early and share work before it is finished. Test the design approach, not just the visual details, and iterate based on what users actually do rather than what they say they prefer. Move prototypes into build-ready specifications and shipped Power BI experiences.
- Design System and Standards: Own and maintain the Power BI visual standard for the BI team, including color conventions, layout patterns, visualization guidelines, authoring standards, and reusable templates for the two primary use cases. Document design decisions so the standard can be evolved intentionally and applied consistently across new builds.
- Experience Outcome Tracking: Track whether shipped work is being used and whether the experience is creating the conditions for decisions to be made. Surface adoption signals and design-related friction back into iteration rather than treating delivery as the endpoint.
- Delivery Operations: Participate in sprint planning, backlog grooming, and effort estimation as part of a structured delivery model. Work is tracked and managed in Azure DevOps.
Qualifications (Minimum)
- 5 or more years designing data experiences - dashboards, reports, or analytics interfaces - in a production environment with real business users
- Advanced Power BI proficiency with hands-on experience building production dashboards and reports, including report authoring, page design, interaction patterns, and information hierarchy, with the ability to make and defend visualization choices based on the insight being communicated
- Demonstrated experience working directly with end users through some form of discovery, including ride-alongs, observational sessions, usability testing, or structured interviews
- Working knowledge of SQL, data modeling, and Power BI build constraints sufficient to have an informed conversation with data developers, recognize when a design depends on data that does not exist, and understand when DAX, model design, or source data changes are needed to support the experience
- Comfortable operating with a high degree of ownership on a small team, taking work from discovery through design, build, and adoption without dedicated research, QA, or adoption support functions
Qualifications (Preferred)
- A portfolio or work examples that show both experience design judgment and hands-on delivery of shipped Power BI dashboards or reports
- Experience building or contributing to a design system or shared visual standard used and maintained by others
- Familiarity with Microsoft Fabric or similar cloud-based analytics platforms
- Experience working within a structured sprint-based delivery model with formal intake processes
- Healthcare operations, revenue cycle, or claims processing domain experience
