A Senior Field Engineer (SFE) focuses on commissioning complex systems — testing and fine‑tuning all equipment to ensure it works independently and as a system, per the design intent. The SFE travels to customer sites within the New England territory (must live within the territory), ensures systems are installed, set up, and operating as designed, solves issues as they arise, and communicates with the team. This position mentors other Field Engineers and provides remote online support.

Responsibilities

  • Commission systems in the field: optimize all equipment settings (audio, video, displays, control, networking) to ensure the system operates as designed.
  • Work closely with system programmers to ensure control systems function without issues; remotely load new code and troubleshoot.
  • Regularly lead teams on large projects.
  • Provide simple code and touch‑panel updates under the direction of the assigned programmer.
  • Stay current on technology, latest firmware updates, and common field issues.
  • Diagnose known and newly found problems and formulate solutions.
  • Mentor and provide remote assistance and support to other Field Engineers.

Role complexity

The field aspect complicates commissioning. The SFE needs a high level of knowledge across a wide variety of equipment and manufacturers, with deep understanding of audio, video, control, and networking systems. Coordination with a wide variety of stakeholders is required. Providing training and support for other FEs and for the most complex systems and tasks demands a very experienced person with exceptional people skills.

Decision making authority

The SFE typically works alone after installation is substantially complete, but still coordinates with project managers, engineers, and other team members to ensure smooth project completion and good communication. Team members are available to answer questions.

Physical demands

The employee may be exposed to construction site conditions on a regular basis and is responsible for their safety and compliance with all site safety regulations (PPE usually required). The role involves spending at least 50% of time on feet, moving around construction sites, occasionally climbing ladders, using stairs, and lifting/moving materials up to 40 pounds. Regular use of keyboards, test equipment, and controls for SI installation projects is required. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral, and depth vision. When not on sites, normal office conditions apply with standard office equipment.

Travel

Frequent travel by car and occasional airplane trips are required. A valid driver’s license in the state of residence is mandatory; a company vehicle is provided. Local travel to job sites (within a 2‑hour drive each way) comprises 70–90% of travel; remote travel can be up to 30% at times, with 10% remote travel required on a regular basis.
