Senior Assignment Editor - Spectrum News NECN

Spectrum News NECN covers MA, NH, ME, VT, RI, and CT. We use innovative journalistic approaches, backed by comprehensive research, to engage and inform viewers on the most essential news, issues, and events taking place in their communities. Beyond TV news distribution, our newsrooms publish via the Spectrum News app and connected television. We’re committed to providing viewers with 24-hour news—no matter how, when and where they want it.
In this role, you will make sure that the top stories are covered each shift by coordinating news crews, resources, and logistics. You will assign news units to cover specific topics in accordance with priorities. In addition, you will work with the news-gathering staff to develop story ideas. You’ll be part of a collaborative team that creates compelling, timely, and accurate content to connect with viewers across traditional and digital platforms.

- Creating connections by contacting beat reporters, wire services, newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate news crews, resources, and logistics to cover top stories each shift.
- Assign news units to cover specific topics based on priorities.
- Develop story ideas with the news-gathering staff.
- Create compelling, timely, and accurate content for traditional and digital platforms.
- Travel to discover important stories in your neighborhood and interact with the community.
Requirements
- Newsroom or related experience: 5+ years.
- Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communication or comparable television work experience preferred.
- Demonstrated news judgment and passion for news.
- Effective interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to develop sources and organize/manage multiple priorities under time pressure.
- Ability to work different shifts, be flexible with schedule changes, and cover stand-by responsibilities when assigned.
- Must be open to travel to discover important community stories.
- May be required to lift up to 5 pounds.
Work environment
Works inside a climate-controlled environment throughout the year. Works in an open newsroom setting with a semi-noisy environment.
Pay
The base pay for this position generally is between $25.90 and $46.70 per hour. The actual compensation offered will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Certain positions are eligible for additional forms of other incentive-based compensation such as bonuses.
