Responsibilities
- Conducting and overseeing inventory and evaluation reports for architectural history
- Client care and management
- Serving as principal investigator for architectural history projects and tasks
- Responding to competitive and sole source opportunities
- Cooking and managing fieldwork for staff
- Conducting and supervising archival and historical research
- Preparing architectural history impacts/adverse effects assessments and developing mitigation measures
- Preparing NHPA and CEQA technical reports, California DPR 523 records and Historic American Building Survey (HABS) / Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) / Historic American Landscape Surveys (HALS)
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in History, Public History, Architecture, Architectural History, or a closely related field
- Minimum of 8-15 years of experience
- Preparation of historic resource evaluations and impact assessments
- Development and implementation of CEQA-compliant strategies, including innovative and effective mitigation approaches
- Strong client relationship management and project management capabilities
- Experience scoping, budgeting, and executing architectural history projects of varying size and complexity
- Experience preparing citywide historic context statements and/or comprehensive historic resource inventories
- Experience conducting and managing large-scale reconnaissance or streamlined review building surveys, including estimating the scope and cost for such efforts
- Experience developing creative and defensible mitigation strategies and documentation for compliance with Section 106, including direct coordination and consultation with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO)
- Experience collaborating with Historic Architects through creative design approaches that balance preservation and project goals
- Ability to expand or extend internal team capabilities through specialized expertise (“extension of staff” support)
- Familiarity with and application of Mills Act programs
- Experience preparing or assisting with State and/or National Register nominations, including navigating associated regulatory processes
Pay
Base full-time annual salary range is $90,000-$140,000.
Schedule
The position will be based in one of our CA offices. Regional travel is required, though infrequent. Depending on circumstances, the position may allow part-time remote work.
