About The Role

We are looking for a Senior Advisor - Communities & Social Performance (CSP) to coordinate and deliver projects that support the Kennecott Copper operation in Salt Lake City, Utah. In this role, you will help maintain strong relationships, engagement, and social investment with surrounding communities. This is a great opportunity for a collaborative CSP professional to provide expert advice, manage social risks and impacts, and support the long-term social license to operate for a world-class copper operation.

Reporting to the Manager, Communities & Social Performance and working within a collaborative and purpose-driven team, you will:

  • Create and implement community engagement strategies that build trust and support meaningful external relationships
  • Lead engagement planning, stakeholder management, complaints and grievances, human rights risk, cultural heritage engagement, partnerships, and social investment activities
  • Prepare studies, analysis, and due diligence to understand social, economic, and community impacts related to operations and projects
  • Provide expert advice to operational and functional leaders to assess, manage, and minimize CSP risks and impacts
  • Ensure compliance with Rio Tinto CSP standards, commitments, policies, complaint and grievance mechanisms, and relevant U.S. requirements
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with local stakeholders, community partners, operational leaders, and internal teams
  • Provide clear performance updates to senior leaders and key stakeholders, including recommendations to address challenges and opportunities
  • Model Rio Tinto’s values of care, courage, and curiosity while supporting a proactive safety culture, ethical conduct, and inclusive team capability

Requirements

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant experience in communities, social performance, stakeholder engagement, communications, public affairs, social impact, or a related field
  • 5-10 years of experience in stakeholder management, community engagement, CSP, social impact, public affairs, or a related discipline
  • Strong knowledge of community engagement, social risk management, human rights considerations, complaints and grievance processes, and CSP systems or tools
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, presentation, communication, and relationship-building skills, including calm and thoughtful communication under pressure
  • Proven ability to influence, collaborate, and serve as a trusted thought partner for operational leaders, HSESC leaders, community partners, and broader teams

About the Location

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter, and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
