About the role
The Deputy Director of Public Works will report to the Director of Public Works. This is a critical position that will manage a broad range of functions in the Public Works Department.
Responsibilities
- Applies current trends in the profession and offers innovative approaches to providing public works services.
- Applies strong business acumen and thinks strategically.
- Demonstrates expertise in consensus building, collaboration, and performance management.
- Leads high-performance, results and customer-oriented teams; leads and empowers staff with multiple direct reports and management oversight; develops staff through performance incentives, goals and training.
- Identifies community needs and integrates them with opportunities, options and solutions.
- Prioritizes and monitors a wide range of detail oriented projects and activities.
- Encourages innovation and calculated risk taking.
- Collaborates with community groups, task forces, etc. in an environment with extensive local history and vested interests.
- Effectively communicates and works with multi-levels of organizational management and service providers to clarify program vision and implementation strategies while gaining and maintaining the confidence and cooperation of a diverse group of stakeholders and community groups.
- Aids an existing dedicated staff in continuing the pace of strong achievement.
- Projects an outgoing personality and maintains a sense of humor in a professional environment.
Requirements
- At least 8 years of increasingly responsible experience in a broad range of public works programs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Engineering or related field. A Master’s degree is desirable.
- Demonstrated experience managing a variety of public works programs is necessary.
- Strong communication skills, work/performance plan management, team decision-making processes and systems analysis skills are also needed.
Qualifications
A strong understanding of local, state, and federal funding for transportation and infrastructure improvements is critical.
