About the role
The American Foundry Society is seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join its Accounting and Finance team. This hybrid position offers broad accounting exposure, meaningful responsibility, and the opportunity to improve processes and contribute to the work of a respected national association.
Responsibilities
- Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Support month-end and year-end close, including intercompany activity and account analysis.
- Cook up accounts payable and receivable processes, including invoices, payments, receipts, refunds, expense reports, and year-end tax documentation.
- Reconcile financial activity between accounting, database, and supporting systems.
- Prepare financial schedules, reports, budget support, and variance analysis.
- Support audit preparation, sales and use tax compliance, grant and project accounting, and other reporting requirements.
- Maintain accurate records and protect confidential financial, payroll, employee, and organizational information.
- Research and resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Recommend improvements to accounting processes, documentation, workflows, and internal controls.
- Cross-train on critical accounting functions and provide guidance to accounting support staff as needed.
- Support AFS events, chapters, committees, and organizational projects assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience may be considered.
- Three to five years of progressive accounting experience, including general ledger accounting, reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
- Working knowledge of GAAP and experience with financial reporting, audit preparation, budgeting, and account analysis.
- Strong Excel skills and experience using accounting or business systems; Oracle NetSuite experience is preferred.
- Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, maintain confidentiality, and produce accurate work.
- Ability to work at AFS Headquarters in Schaumburg one to two days per week, with occasional schedule flexibility and limited travel.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Qualifications
- Experience with nonprofit, association, and grant-project accounting.
- Experience with NetSuite, Salesforce, Nimble, association management software, or comparable systems.
