Position Overview MOGEL is partnering with a company to hire an organized, analytical, and intellectually curious Senior Accountant. This is a hands-on role for an accounting professional who will play an important part in the company’s core financial operations. Candidates must currently reside in the Phoenix metropolitan area or be willing to relocate to the area to be considered for this opportunity. The Senior Accountant will support and progressively assume ownership of the month-end close, general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting. The position will also contribute to audit and tax preparation, internal controls, process improvement, reporting initiatives, and special projects. The successful candidate will bring a strong accounting foundation developed through a combination of public accounting and private-industry experience. This person should be interested in understanding how the company operates, how transactions flow through the general ledger, and how the accounting records support accurate financial and management reporting. Experience with budgeting, forecasting, KPI reporting, and financial analysis is helpful, but the primary focus of this position is accounting. Key Responsibilities Accounting and Month-End Close Support and progressively assume ownership of the month-end close process. Prepare and review journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and supporting schedules. Develop a thorough understanding of the company’s general ledger, chart of accounts, transaction flows, and financial reporting structure. Investigate and resolve reconciling items rather than allowing unexplained balances to carry forward. Review account activity and identify unusual balances, inconsistencies, or potential errors. Apply sound judgment to determine which accounts and transactions require additional analysis. Maintain the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the general ledger. Apply GAAP appropriately and research unfamiliar accounting matters when necessary. Prepare accurate and polished financial reports for management and other stakeholders. Audit, Tax, and Internal Controls Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for the annual audit and tax filings. Respond completely and promptly to requests from external auditors and tax professionals. Execute established controls over financial reporting consistently. Help maintain clear documentation supporting accounting processes and internal controls. Identify opportunities to strengthen controls and reduce reliance on manual or fragile processes. Improve the efficiency, accuracy, and documentation of recurring accounting activities. Systems and Process Improvement Learn the systems, data, and processes supporting the company’s accounting and reporting functions. Identify opportunities to make recurring processes faster, cleaner, more reliable, and better documented. Support future accounting system upgrades, reporting enhancements, and automation initiatives. Explore responsible applications of AI and other emerging tools without compromising accuracy, security, or human accountability. Work effectively with outside vendors and internal stakeholders to resolve accounting system or process-related issues. What Strong Performance Looks Like A Successful Senior Accountant Will Develop a strong understanding of how the company operates and how its business activity is reflected in the accounting records. Complete accounting work accurately, thoroughly, and on schedule. Help ensure the month-end close runs efficiently and without significant oversight from senior leaders. Identify unusual activity, discrepancies, and potential issues before they are discovered during review. Research unfamiliar technical questions and bring forward a thoughtful recommendation. Produce financial reports and analyses that require limited review or revision. Improve recurring accounting processes rather than completing them the same way indefinitely. Exercise good judgment about what requires deeper investigation and what is not financially material. Approach requests as business problems to understand and solve, not simply tasks to complete. Required Education and Experience Bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. A minimum of three years of accounting experience covering the full month-end close cycle. Experience gained through a combination of public accounting and private-industry accounting. Hands-on experience with the general ledger, journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting. Strong working knowledge of GAAP and full-cycle accounting. Ability to research an unfamiliar accounting question, reach a supportable conclusion, and explain the conclusion clearly. Advanced Excel skills and comfort learning accounting systems, reporting platforms, and business intelligence tools. Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities. Clear written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work effectively in an environment with fluid responsibilities, shifting priorities, and assignments that may not arrive with detailed instructions. Strong attention to detail that remains consistent under deadline pressure. Current residence in the Phoenix metropolitan area or willingness to relocate to the area. Ability to successfully complete a background check. Preferred Qualifications CPA or active progress toward CPA licensure. Experience with QuickBooks or a similar accounting system. Experience working in a small or midsize company with broad, hands-on accounting responsibilities. Exposure to budgeting, forecasting, KPI reporting, or financial analysis. Experience supporting an external audit, tax preparation, internal controls, or an accounting system implementation. Interest in accounting technology, automation, process improvement, and responsible use of AI-enabled tools.
