About The Minnesota Orchestra

The Minnesota Orchestra is a Grammy Award-winning orchestra known for acclaimed performances in Minnesota and around the world, a storied history of recordings and radio broadcasts, innovative educational engagement programs and a commitment to new orchestral music. Founded by Emil Oberhoffer in 1903 as the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, the organization was the eighth major orchestra established in the United States. Today the Orchestra performs a wide variety of music including nearly 175 concerts in a typical year, primarily at Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis. The Orchestra is led by Music Director Thomas Søndergård and has an annual budget of $42.6M, ending FY2024 with net assets of $185.5M. The organization employs over 150 full-time employees and over 100 part-time staff, supported by an 80+ member Board of Directors.

Responsibilities

Accounting (50%):

  • Record and reconcile general ledger transactions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll entries, and journal entries.
  • Perform monthly and annual closings; prepare supporting schedules for audits and governmental reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and fund accounting requirements.
  • Maintain accurate grant and restricted fund tracking.
  • Assist with internal controls and audit readiness.

Financial Analysis (50%):

  • Develop and maintain financial models for annual budgets, forecasts, and cash flow projections.
  • Analyze financial results vs. budget, investigate variances, and provide actionable insights.
  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports and dashboards for all departments.
  • Prepare financial reports and dashboards for CFO and Controller to present at board meetings.
  • Support grant proposals and renewals with budgeting, forecasting, and financial narratives.
  • Recommend process improvements to enhance financial reporting and analysis.

Work Environment and Physical and Mental Demands

The Minnesota Orchestra is primarily a place-based organization, offering hybrid schedules that require some consistent, in-person, on-site work. Work is performed in an open office environment with moderate noise levels, on stage, in lobbies, or other locations within Orchestra Hall. The role may occasionally require outdoor work for concerts or other activities. Responsibilities may include:

  • Sitting or standing at a desk or work surface.
  • Talking, hearing, and using hands or fingers to handle objects.
  • Reviewing documents or monitors with small print.
  • Operating computers, phones, and other office tools.
  • Attending meetings or events at Orchestra locations or other sites.
  • Lifting or moving objects up to 15 lbs.

The typical work schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with the possibility of extended evening, weekend, or holiday hours. This exempt position requires delivering work within established deadlines and quality standards, with some autonomy to determine attendance at performances or other events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • CPA or progress toward it is a plus.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting and/or financial analysis experience, preferably in a non-profit environment.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting.
  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to translate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.

Skills

  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI) a plus.
  • Experience with accounting/ERP software preferred.

Pay

$85,000 to $105,000 annually
