Senior Accountant/Accountant Trainee

About the role

This position may be filled as a traineeship with the following starting salaries:

• $51,809 (Trainee 1, equated to SG-14)
• $57,751 (Trainee 2, equated to SG-16)
• $64,427 (Journey Level, SG-18)

For current New York State employees, salary is based on the candidate’s salary at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

• Maintain the Financial Statement creation file along with corresponding support.
• Create, review, and distribute the Financial Statements.
• Monitor the progress of other departments which contribute to the Financial Statements, ensuring they provide the information necessary for completion.
• Prepare various ledger entries, with corresponding support, to be approved for posting.
• Daily posting of General Ledger entries along with the import and posting of system generated entries.
• Maintain in-office reconciliations to verify account balances are correct.
• Work with outside departments to identify and correct any issues with the General Ledger.
• Close various modules within the Authority’s accounting software.
• Maintain lease records and accounting schedules within the Authority’s lease software.
• Maintain the Authority’s internal system report repository.
• Prepare monthly payment files for Health Insurance and Union Benefits, as well as interfund transfer memos.
• Maintain and generate monthly Financial Reports from the Accounting software, along with any other reports needed.
• Assist in Year End Reporting with any additional needs that may arise.

Requirements

• Current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service allocated to a Grade 13 or above and eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 and 70.4 of the NYS Civil Service Law.

Qualifications

Accountant Trainee 1

• A bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation; or any bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses.

Accountant Trainee 2

• A bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation; or any bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and one year of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, where you were responsible for the full range of activities in the design and/or review, analysis and management of accounting systems, resulting in preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles.
• A master’s or higher degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation may substitute for one year of experience.

Senior Accountant

• A bachelor's degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation or a bachelor's degree with 24 semester credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses and two years of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, where you were responsible for the full range of activities in the design and/or review, analysis and management of accounting systems, resulting in the preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles.
• A master’s degree in accounting, auditing, or taxation and one year of professional experience in accounting/auditing or financial internal or field auditing, where you were responsible for the full range of activities in the design and/or review, analysis and management of accounting systems, resulting in the preparation of, or recommendations on, financial statements in accord with generally accepted accounting principles.
• OR a currently valid Certified Public Accountant license and registration issued by New York State.

Note that courses such as business law, economics, statistics, and most finance courses—although taken as a part of an accounting curriculum—cannot be counted toward the 24-semester credit hours.

Pay

• Base Pay: $51,809 hiring rate up to $91,809 job rate
• Recruitment & Retention Pay: $7,000
