About the role

The Senior Academic Counselor interviews, advises, and counsels students regarding admission procedures and academic requirements for the nursing degree program. This role coordinates and refers support services and programs within the department and university, identifies diverse student needs, and implements retention strategies. The Senior Counselor also mentors other advisors to ensure consistent policies and procedures, and facilitates training sessions for academic advisors and success strategy sessions for nursing students.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate student success strategy workshops each semester to help students identify and overcome educational barriers.
• Mentor new academic advisors and facilitate orientation, training them on best practices to support students effectively.
• Serve as a team/project lead for advising students on degree/program requirements and course scheduling.
• Conduct student interviews, provide feedback to the admission committee, and answer questions about nursing programs.
• Implement advising initiatives and protocols for targeted student populations, maintaining individualized action plans and retention strategies.
• Lead and train advising staff, perform quality checks, and develop training curriculum content for advisors.
• Coordinate and facilitate training sessions for academic advisors on changes within nursing and the university.
• Manage and analyze student academic data, prepare reports, and develop strategies for retention and student success.
• Supervise work assignments and delegate projects to advisors, ensuring successful implementation of student success initiatives.

Requirements

• Master’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution.
• Four years of experience in student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.
• Commitment to diversity and inclusion in fulfillment of the university mission.
• Knowledgeable of university and pre-professional curriculum requirements, advising practices, and principles.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal and analytical skills.
• Ability to analyze data with standard statistical methods and interpret results.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
• Excellent counseling skills and ability to work with diverse populations.
• Knowledge of general college requirements for admission and proficiency in various computer programs for database management.
