About the role

Within the Emergency Department (ED), you will work with patients of all ages who present with a wide range of acute care needs. The department is highly dynamic, handling everything from minor injuries to complex and life-threatening situations. During the 18-month Emergency Nursing training program, you will learn to examine patients in a structured manner and quickly make the right assessments in acute situations.

The majority of the practical training takes place in the LUMC’s ED, while the theoretical component is provided through EPA-focused education at Educatie Zorgsector within the LUMC. By combining learning and working, you will immediately apply new knowledge in the practical setting.

Patients and their loved ones are often in stressful and uncertain situations. In these moments, you make a difference by acting quickly, maintaining an overview, and communicating clearly. You will be guided by experienced colleagues and gradually develop more independence in acute care.

Responsibilities

• Examine patients in a structured way within acute care
• Assess the acute care needs and determine the right priorities
• Perform nursing interventions and acute procedures
• Collaborate with doctors and colleagues in multidisciplinary acute care teams

During the training, you will receive intensive guidance from experienced ED nurses and mentors. This will help you develop not only professional knowledge and skills but also grow in clinical reasoning, teamwork, and performing under pressure.

Where you will work

The Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) is an academic hospital where patient care, research, and education are closely interconnected. The ED is a level 1 trauma center, providing highly complex and acute care to patients of all ages on a daily basis. Working in the ED means operating in an environment where dynamics, collaboration, and quick decision-making are central.

No two shifts are the same: one moment you may stabilize a patient with severe injuries, the next you provide acute care to a child or support an elderly patient. This variety makes the work both challenging and educational. You will collaborate closely with doctors, nurses, and other disciplines, where acute care is truly a team effort.

The culture is characterized by involvement, short communication lines, and a willingness to actively support each other. In addition to the dynamics of acute care, there is a strong focus on guidance, learning, and development. The team fosters a warm and safe work environment, where there is room to ask questions, gain experience, and grow step by step in the profession.

Requirements

You maintain calm in acute situations and can quickly adapt. You enjoy acquiring new knowledge and skills and approach challenges with a practical and eager-to-learn attitude. Working independently as well as collaborating within a multidisciplinary team feels natural to you. In interactions with patients, their loved ones, and colleagues, you communicate openly and carefully, even under pressure. Taking responsibility for your own learning process and continuing to develop within acute care comes naturally.

• A diploma in nursing (hbo-V or mbo-V/A)
• A valid BIG registration
• Willingness to work shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends
• At least 1 year of relevant work experience

Pay

As a trainee Emergency Nurse, your salary ranges from a minimum of €3,171 to a maximum of €4,492 gross per month (scale 7, CAO UMC), based on a full-time position. From May 1, 2027, a salary increase of 3.5% will apply.
