Seed Lab Technician

About the Role

This Technician role is in the Standard Seed Testing (SST) area, involving preparing seed samples for planting, germinating, and growing starter plants to gather data on yields and seed performance. The lab supports over 400 different species of seeds and identifies all of them.

Responsibilities

• Review testing plans and seedling layouts to create lab-scale growing plots.
• Prepare seeds, soil, and plant growth media for planting.
• Germinate seeds, plant them, and monitor growth at various stages for subjective and qualitative data on yields and growth performance.
• Clean glassware, maintain stock/chemical inventory, and clean the workspace.
• Document via paper and LIMS to track samples and provide data for customers.

Main Functions of the Lab

• Purity or Noxious Testing: Identify contaminants in seeds by sorting them.
• Planting: Prepare plots by standing and mixing soil, seed, and sand, then plant seeds.
• Evaluating: Review previously planted seeds for abnormal seedlings, performed with a partner to double-check yields.

Qualifications

• 2-year or 4-year degree in a Technical discipline.
• Basic laboratory experience from coursework or work experience.
• Attention to detail, verified by references.
