About the role

The Security Police Officer’s primary responsibility is to ensure a safe and secure environment for all patients, staff, and visitors to the SJMHS-West Market. Under the supervision of the Chief of Security Police, the officer will provide services including security patrols, preservation of peace, assurance of safety, customer service, report writing, detection and prevention of criminal activity, and effecting arrests within the parameters of security police policy, procedures, directives, as well as state and federal law.

Responsibilities

  • Represent the Health System by providing assistance and guidance to all patients, staff, and visitors.
  • Patrol and monitor internal and external activities of the grounds, parking lots, structures, and buildings to ensure compliance with health center policies, state law, and federal laws; report violations to a command officer.
  • Respond to reports of criminal activity and effect arrests as appropriate within security police policy, state and federal law, and Michigan Commission of Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES), using necessary force, handcuffs, and other restraints.
  • Respond to emergencies, fire and building alarms, patient standby/restraint situations, persons with weapons, medical emergencies, and other public safety incidents.
  • Exercise independent judgment to determine reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and appropriate use of force to preserve life and property.
  • Complete daily activity reports documenting non-routine activities for referral to the appropriate manager.
  • Write reports on complaints, criminal activity investigations, policy violations, suspicious activity, and incidents involving use of force using appropriate documenting procedures.
  • Perform defibrillator and vehicle maintenance checks as assigned.
  • Maintain all security police equipment in working condition; report safety risks and hazards to command officers and take immediate action when possible.
  • Respond to complaints from patients, staff, and visitors regarding lost property, suspicious activity, improper access, and suspicious packages.
  • Respond to general assist calls, including locking/unlocking doors, vehicle lockouts and jumpstarts, wheelchair assists, and other customer service issues.
  • Report malfunctioning parking lot gates to Grounds; issue citations for improper parking, handicap, and fire lane violations.
  • Self-report any off-duty police contact, arrests, court orders (e.g., Injunctions, Personal Protection Orders), or legal proceedings that would prevent firearm possession or carrying.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, Trinity Health Standards of Conduct, Organizational Integrity Program, and security police policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent; associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in campus security/police, military, or law enforcement preferred.
  • Successfully complete and pass a psychological evaluation.
  • Current MCOLES license preferred or ability to pass MCOLES PA330 Academy Training within six months of hire date or the first available academy.
  • Maintain qualifications required by MCOLES and the State of Michigan.
  • Valid, unrestricted Michigan driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate an Electronic Control Device (Taser), including manipulating cartridges, aiming/firing, and maintaining emotional control under stress.
  • Conduct Taser aftercare procedures as required by policy.
  • Maintain annual Taser Certification and demonstrate proficiency through a certified qualification test and use-of-force policy review.

  • Proficiency in reading and writing English.
