About the role

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking an Advanced Readiness Standard (ARS) Security Police Officer to support the Laboratory Protection Division. This position is designated for ARS duties.

Responsibilities

  • Protect DOE security interests, ORNL personnel, facilities, property, and mission activities through armed security, access control, patrol, assessment, response, and other assigned Protective Force functions.
  • Maintain working knowledge of applicable federal law, DOE directives, site policies and procedures, post orders, and mission-essential tasks; execute assigned duties to established performance standards.
  • Respond rapidly, decisively, and safely to safeguards and security alarms, emergencies, and abnormal conditions in accordance with site-specific protection strategies, post orders, and command direction.
  • Perform ARS-level response duties that may require extensive tactical movement on foot and support the pursuit and recovery of DOE security interests when directed.
  • Apply approved tactics and use assigned firearms, intermediate force options, and weaponless self-defense techniques to perform protective duties, including interdiction, interruption, neutralization, apprehension, and support to recapture or recovery missions as applicable to assigned duties.
  • Make sound, timely decisions while armed and authorized to use force, including under confusing, stressful, and potentially life-threatening conditions, consistent with law, DOE requirements, training, and site procedures.
  • Safely maintain, carry, operate, and demonstrate continuing proficiency with assigned firearms, protective equipment, communications systems, vehicles, and other duty equipment.
  • Conduct inspections and searches of persons, vehicles, packages, and property as authorized; detect and identify prohibited articles and site-specific security interests.
  • Provide security escorts and other protective support for personnel, property, material, and Laboratory activities as assigned.
  • Exercise DOE-authorized arrest authority and perform detention or restraint functions consistent with applicable law, DOE requirements, training, and site procedures.
  • Report security, safety, equipment, or operational concerns promptly and accurately; complete required logs, reports, and documentation and maintain effective radio and face-to-face communications.

    Requirements

    • HS Diploma or equivalent.
    • At least 21 years of age and possess a valid driver's license.
    • Have a minimum of 5 years law enforcement of military (in relevant career field) experience.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain medical certification for Security Police Officer duties and successfully meet the Advanced Readiness Standard (ARS) requirements of 10 CFR Part 1046 for the assigned position.
    • For initial qualification, ability to complete the ARS physical readiness standard, including the Fixed Post Readiness Standard, a one-mile run in 8 minutes 30 seconds or less, a 40-yard dash from the prone position in 8.0 seconds or less, and any site-specific physical readiness measures required for essential functions.
    • Ability to successfully complete and maintain all required DOE and site-specific Security Police Officer training and qualifications, including firearms, use of force, defensive tactics, arrest authority, equipment, and mission-essential task requirements.
    • Ability to obtain and maintain the required DOE Q access authorization and Human Reliability Program (HRP) certification and to comply with Workplace Substance Abuse Program requirements.
    • Ability to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, and extended hours as required by mission needs and to perform duties in indoor and outdoor environments under adverse weather and demanding physical conditions.

    Qualifications

    • Current DOE Q access authorization.
    • Successful completion of DOE Tactical Response Force-100 or equivalent current DOE-recognized SPO training.
    • Prior DOE Protective Force, military, federal law enforcement, or comparable armed security experience.
    • Experience working with security organizations, law enforcement agencies, military organizations, or emergency response organizations in a disciplined operational environment.

    Special Requirements

    • Q Clearance: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy.
    • As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
    • Human Reliability Program (HRP): This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain certification in the Department of Energy Human Reliability Program, including applicable medical, psychological, drug and alcohol testing, and reliability requirements.
    • Physical Readiness - ARS: This position requires the Advanced Readiness Standard under 10 CFR Part 1046 and the ability to perform all applicable ARS and site-specific essential functions. Applicants must meet the applicable physical readiness qualification requirements before beginning active duty in the assigned position.
