Security Officer, Rover (40 hrs.)

Home locations: Barnett, Hilltop, Northside, and Parsons branches. These positions provide coverage at all locations.

Pay

$19.20 – $20.20 hourly (starting pay range).

About the Position

Provides flexible security coverage at various library branches based on operational needs, staffing requirements, and emergency response situations. Ensures an orderly, safe, and secure environment for customers and staff; addresses disruptive or offensive behavior, unsafe conditions, and minimizes theft of library property. Ensures a positive customer experience.

Schedule

• Barnett: Monday-Wednesday 11am-8pm, Thursday 9am-6pm, alternating Friday/Saturday 9am-6pm, 1 in 5 Sundays 1pm-5pm
• Hilltop: Monday-Wednesday 9am-6pm, Thursday 11am-8pm, alternating Friday/Saturday 9am-6pm, 1 in 5 Sundays 1pm-5pm
• Northside: Monday 11am-8pm, Tuesday-Thursday 9am-6pm, alternating Friday/Saturday 9am-6pm, 1 in 5 Sundays 1pm-5pm
• Parsons: Monday 9am-6pm, Tuesday-Thursday 11am-8pm, alternating Friday/Saturday 9am-6pm, 1 in 5 Sundays 1pm-5pm

Responsibilities

• Report to assigned branch based on daily operational and staffing needs, which may differ from designated home location
• Patrol buildings and grounds at regular intervals and handle observed irregularities or problems
• Prevent theft of library property and follow all issued post orders
• Use non-violent crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to address disruptive, offensive, or inappropriate behavior; suspend from property as necessary
• Ensure a positive customer experience by greeting customers, answering directional questions, and participating in organization-wide initiatives/special events
• Respond to, investigate, and report safety hazards, security incidents, parking enforcement, or emergencies, including reviewing CCTV footage
• Secure the building at closing and ensure all staff and customers depart safely; complete closing checklist daily
• Maintain professional appearance and report uniform needs to security management
• Carry all necessary equipment in working order and report equipment needs to security management
• Collaborate with law enforcement on public safety issues; file police reports and appear in court as needed
• Assist in emergency response drills and other training throughout the year
• Test and validate security equipment (lockdown buttons, alarm panels, panic buttons, security cameras, etc.) as needed
• Assist physically challenged customers entering or leaving library facilities, including during emergency evacuations
• Render first aid in medical emergencies and contact trained medical professionals as appropriate
• Document incidents in reporting software according to guidelines
• Escalate serious issues or those with significant risk to security and location management
• Adapt to varying branch environments, customer populations, building layouts, and security concerns while ensuring consistent application of library policies and security procedures
• Maintain flexibility to adjust work assignments, reporting locations, and schedules on short notice
• Maintain accurate and timely administrative records, including mileage logs, incident reports, and other required documentation
• Perform additional duties as assigned

Requirements

• High school diploma or G.E.D.
• 1-3 years of relevant customer service or security experience or training
• Valid driver license meeting CML’s vehicle insurance policy requirements and access to a personal vehicle to report to varied work locations
• Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
• Ability to carry and use Oleoresin Capsicum (OC or pepper spray) upon receiving necessary training
• Ability to respond quickly and effectively when physical safety of staff and/or customers is endangered, after receiving necessary training
• Must work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings, and carry a cellular telephone for emergency response
• Work schedule includes rotational on-call duties
• Ability to respond to assignment changes professionally and maintain effective working relationships across multiple locations
• Strong organizational and time-management skills to travel efficiently between locations and arrive on time for shifts
• Ability to actively patrol (on foot) and use stairs throughout the shift and quickly respond to incidents
• Ability to operate library technology including personal computer, email, software programs (Windows/Microsoft Office), and other job-related equipment

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts requiring normal safety precautions typical of offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, and residences or commercial vehicles (e.g., safe workplace practices, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals, and/or working in moderate outdoor weather conditions).

• Occasional exertion of up to 50 lbs. of force and frequent exertion of up to 20 lbs. of force
• In emergency situations, may require sprinting short distances, quickly ascending and descending stairs, performing CPR, and exerting in excess of 50 lbs. of force
