Security Officer (Peace Officer)

About the Role

Under general supervision, ensures a safe and secure environment for District employees, visitors, internal and external stakeholders, and District buildings, grounds, and equipment. Performs high-level customer service while providing physical security through roving patrols, traffic control, and emergency response. Serves as the primary security response until emergency units arrive or transports individuals to medical facilities. Rotates across all District locations to maintain familiarity with duties and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

• Patrols designated areas on foot or using District-provided transportation (e.g., car, Segway, bicycle).
• Conducts periodic tours of buildings and grounds to inspect doors, windows, gates, perimeter fences, and equipment.
• Monitors security systems, alarms, and closed-circuit television to detect and respond to security violations.
• Identifies and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, safety concerns, and security risks.
• Ensures doors, windows, and gates are secured and reports unusual circumstances to authorities (e.g., police, fire departments, facility management).
• Responds to emergencies, including administering first aid, CPR, and deploying an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
• Investigates incidents, disturbances, and non-process accidents; liaises with emergency response teams.
• Receives visitors, provides information, and responds to telephone inquiries during non-business hours.
• Operates weigh scales, access gates, and security doors at designated times.
• Monitors and authorizes entrance/departure of employees, visitors, and vehicles; maintains sign-in/out logs and performs inspections.
• Directs crowds at events and oversees equipment pick-up/delivery.
• Prepares reports and gathers relevant information in accordance with SOPs and District policies.
• Provides security training to District employees, contractors, and stakeholders.
• Transports employees for substance tests or minor injuries; provides minor vehicle assistance (e.g., battery charging, lockouts).
• Participates in continuing education to maintain peace officer commission and completes all required training.

Requirements

• High school diploma, GED, or state-recognized equivalent.
• Must be 21 years of age.
• Current and valid peace officer certification in Ohio (verified through OPOTA).
• Certified, willing, and able to carry, maintain, and handle a District-issued firearm.
• First Aid and CPR/AED certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days of employment).
• Valid Ohio driver’s license with a clean driving record per District guidelines.
• Successful completion of pre-employment assessments (written test, physical agility test, psychological assessment, background investigation, interview, and medical examination).
• No criminal convictions involving violence, theft, sexual offenses, or other disqualifying felonies/misdemeanors (minor traffic offenses excepted).

• Organizational and computer skills; ability to administer first aid, CPR, and AED.

Physical and Mental Demands

• Ability to compare, copy, compile, coordinate, negotiate, compute, analyze, synthesize, and instruct.
• Physical tasks include standing, sitting, walking, climbing, stooping, balancing, reaching, and handling for extended periods.
• May require crawling, crouching, kneeling, or running during conflicts.
• Must wear issued protective gear (up to 25 pounds daily).
• Rarely may need to push/pull over 100 pounds in emergencies.
• Visual demands: near/far acuity, depth perception, color vision, and accommodation.
• Works primarily outdoors, exposed to extreme weather, hazards, vibrations, and confined spaces.
• Rotating 12-hour shifts with potential mandatory overtime (up to 16 hours).

Schedule

Rotating 12-hour shifts with the possibility of mandatory overtime up to 16 hours.
