Security Officer Part Time

Location: Western State Hospital, 103 Valley Center Drive, Staunton, VA 24401.

About the role

Western State Hospital is seeking a part-time Security Officer to maintain adequate coverage for the Public Safety Department to fulfill its mission. Western State Hospital, part of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), is a 302-bed Joint Commission/CMS-accredited psychiatric facility located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley. The hospital serves adults with serious mental health needs and is nationally recognized for its Psychosocial Rehabilitation “Learning” programs. Responsibilities

• Serve as a bailiff for judicial hearings at WSH and handle patient transports.
• Respond and assist unit staff with patients as requested at the facility.
• Check in and scan all visitors in the front lobby, as well as patients returning via the front lobby, using a walk-through metal detector and hand wand.
• Transport combative, dangerous, or public safety patients to/from other state facilities, court hearings, and appointments.
• Investigate and compile detailed information for special reports from start to finish.
• Patrol hospital property, monitor parking and traffic, and conduct vehicle accident investigations as needed.
• Gather and communicate information orally and in writing, including shift-to-shift communications.
• Prepare and submit completed special reports in a timely manner.

Requirements

• Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
• Experience in law enforcement, public safety, or related fields involving public interaction and service delivery.
• High school graduate or equivalent.

Background Investigation

All applicants are subject to an extensive background investigation, including fingerprint checks (State Police, FBI), local agency checks, Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services checks, employment verification, and education verification. Under Virginia Code 37.2-314 and 37.2-408.1, DBHDS cannot employ individuals convicted of specific ("barrier") crimes or those with pending "barrier" charges. A pre-employment drug screening is also required.

Pay

$23.05 per hour.
