About the role

This is security work at the full performance level. A position in this class makes rounds of assigned County facilities, responds to calls for assistance, and safeguards individuals and property. Work includes directing and assisting members of the public visiting the facility. A position in this class reports directly to a technical or administrative supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Make rounds, by foot or vehicle, of assigned areas including parking lots and grounds; check doors, windows, gates and other points of entry; check security clocks, stations and records.
  • Observe conditions and situations contributing to any possible loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism or other causes; activate alarm systems; lock doors; open locked doors for authorized personnel; refuse entry to unauthorized individuals; keep records of individuals entering and exiting the facility after normal public hours.
  • Respond to calls for assistance and/or alarms; use fire extinguishers and other emergency equipment; enforce established regulations; contact law-enforcement agencies for assistance; observe apparently aberrant behavior; conduct disruptive individuals from the premises; direct visitors and those having business to facility offices and other areas.
  • Keep logs and make reports of ongoing activities; notify higher-level personnel of any unusual conditions or occurrences, including need for emergency repairs; review logs and reports of previous shifts, noting situations requiring follow-up.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods and techniques of facility security work.
  • Ability to learn specific layout and location of facility offices, areas, exits and related elements.
  • Ability to recognize and respond to emergency and/or confrontational situations.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with individuals occupying and members of the public visiting the assigned facility.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to keep records of activities and submit reports of same.
  • Ability to perform foot patrol of large facilities for periods of a few hours at a time.
  • Ability to work in close proximity to nursing facility patients, families and visitors, if required by work assignment.

Additional Requirements

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Experience

Education equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and one to two years of security, law-enforcement or related work, or any equivalent combination of acceptable training and experience which has provided the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Education

G.E.D. or High School Diploma.

A criminal background check is required.
