About the role

The Protective Services Officer provides internal and external safety/security functions to support the general safety of BSMH facilities to include participation in investigations and detentions when warranted. This position also involves protecting patients, visitors and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating environment of care safety hazards.

Responsibilities

  • Deters criminal activity through routine patrols of all hospital property to include all parking lots and decks.
  • Enforces policies e.g. parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco free/smoking policy.
  • Maintains strong technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software, with the ability to accurately document incidents and coordinate effectively with clinical teams and law enforcement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Vocational/Technical Degree (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required within 6 months of hire)
  • RSFH Specific: Must meet South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (www.SLED.SC.gov) licensure requirements (armed – Taser) within 6 months of hire and complete TASER Training certification within 60 days, in accordance with SLED guidelines and maintained thereafter.
  • 1-2 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience (preferred)

Qualifications

  • Basic skills using Microsoft Word
  • Proficiency in the use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment (e.g., batons, handcuffs, body-worn cameras, soft restraints), in alignment with healthcare regulations and organizational policies.
