About the role
Performs a variety of duties to provide assistance and information to all patients, visitors and staff. Enforces WVU Medicine policies and procedures to provide a safe, secure environment, in support of the Security Program.
Responsibilities
- Maintains consistent visibility and presence at assigned locations to provide an information and directional resource for all patients, visitors and staff distributing accurate information to all who request such.
- Responds to all patient, visitor and staff requests for information/assistance in a caring, courteous manner.
- Provides physical assistance, wheelchair assistance, transport services, escort services and room access patients, visitors and staff accessing WVU Medicine facilities.
- Maintains traffic flow in parking areas and roadways by assisting disabled vehicles, issuing parking permits and warning violations.
- Protects people and property by assisting in the prevention of accidents, theft and vandalism, in accordance with system and department policies and procedures, as monitored by supervision.
- Makes recommendations to management, staff, visitors and patients to improve security and prevent accidents and crime.
- Reports suspicious situations, circumstances, incidents and persons, according to system and department policy and procedures.
- Responds and provides assistance to patients, visitors and staff during fire and disaster drills, animal control issues, transportation of valuables, and lost/found issues, according to system and department policy and procedures.
- Provides written documentation of activities, incidents, premises safety, accidents, theft, vandalism and other data requested by supervision in a factual, objective and legible manner.
- Responds to and provides assistance to patients, visitors and staff during emergency situations such as; assaults, domestic disputes, fire, vandalism, bomb threats, theft, vehicle accidents, disasters, etc.
- Performs patient restraint as directed by clinical staff, and is capable of physical intervention when appropriate.
- Operates Hospital-owned vehicles in a safe and responsible manner.
- Ensures safety and proper operating condition of vehicles by performing vehicle inspections, as outlined by departmental policy.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent AND 3 years of experience in the security field OR Associate’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 1 year experience OR Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, criminology, forensics, law or related field of study AND 6 months experience in the security field.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Obtain certification in BLS or HeartSaver First Aid within 60 days of hire date.
- State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.
- Successfully pass psychological evaluation.
- Completion of the training requirements for an armed security officer.
- Meet all ACT 235 training certification requirements including satisfactory completion of Psychological evaluation, Physical and course work within 60 days of hire.
- ACT 235 certification must be maintained during employment period.
- Satisfactory completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and course work required within one (1) year of hire.
- Obtain certification in HeartSaver First Aid within 60 days of hire date.
- Satisfactorily completion of the training requirements for an armed security officer is required.
- Meet all ACT 235 training certification requirements including satisfactory completion of Psychological evaluation, Physical and course work within 60 days of hire.
- ACT 235 certification must be maintained during employment period.
- Satisfactory completion of all departmental Lethal Weapon Training and course work required within one (1) year of hire.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited Federal, State, or Local Law Enforcement Academy.
- One (1) year experience in a healthcare security environment.
Skills
- Good decision making and organizational skills.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to train Security Officers 1 & 2.
