About the Role

Performs the essential duties and responsibilities and the primary functions of a Security Officer in providing safety and security to the staff, patients, visitors, and property of Midland Memorial Hospital (MMH). Must use independent judgment in making decisions in a technical or professional field; research and analysis of information that concerns issues of a routine nature, and completion of non-routine procedures in conformance with instructions from supervisor or written guidelines. Maintains the safety, privacy, and dignity of all patients, visitors, and employees while adhering to the MMH Culture of Ownership.

Responsibilities

  • Answers all calls for security, with dispatch calls taking precedence over patrolling.
  • Handles calls including but not limited to: taking reports, status checks, valuable/lost and found pick-up/return, phone calls, unlocking doors, PML pick-up/release, vehicle assists, escorts, and addressing suspicious persons/vehicles.
  • Ensures the safety of all patients, physicians, guests, visitors, and employees of the Hospital, working under stressful conditions with varying work hours and shifts.
  • Performs routine walking patrols throughout the interior and exterior of all Midland Memorial properties, including floor-to-floor security patrols and security clocking rounds.
  • Conducts predetermined locking and unlocking of doors.
  • Transports money, medications, and lost and found items according to policy.
  • Investigates criminal and non-criminal incidents reported to the Security Department and prepares detailed, written reports.
  • Establishes a high-visibility profile to deter criminal activity.
  • Reports and documents any safety or security issues, taking appropriate action to resolve hazards (e.g., contacting EVS, Facilities Engineering, or Clinical staff). Safety hazards include:
    • Fire hazards
    • Blocked emergency exits
    • Obstructed fire alarms or missing fire extinguishers
    • Wet floors or spills
    • Uneven walking surfaces
    • Unsecure offices or storage rooms
    • Visible patient information to unauthorized personnel
  • Monitors parking areas for suspicious activity, vehicles with doors open or lights left on, and enforces the No Smoking policy on campus.
  • Checks for damage to glass, walls, or doors, and improperly functioning equipment.
  • Ensures all interior and exterior doors secure properly and checks all areas (including restrooms and breakrooms) for accidents, running water, or leaks.
  • Patrols parking lots, driveways, and emergency traffic areas to detect traffic hazards, parking violations, and deter criminal activity.
  • Assists with patient, visitor, guest, and employee vehicle problems when requested.
  • Provides security presence in parking facilities during shift change to promote an atmosphere of safety.
  • Assists MCHD Police with transportation of patients under Emergency Detention Orders to in-patient psychiatric care facilities.
  • Responds to disturbances, disruptive patients, lost children, and intoxicated subjects.
  • Provides routine and special assignments in the Emergency Department, including immediate response to code situations and emergency calls for assistance.
  • Assists with Medivac operations, restraints as ordered, and issues trespass warnings as directed by law and Hospital policy.
  • Assists in receiving, securing, and transporting law enforcement patients.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relations with patients, physicians, visitors, guests, and co-workers.
  • Answers all alarms and emergency calls requiring Security assistance, including fire, pharmacy, and panic alarms.
  • Responds to Hospital-wide emergency calls and meets responding fire department and life support personnel in accordance with policy.
  • Secures lost and found articles, tags, logs, and attempts to contact owners for return of property.
  • Responds appropriately to safety and life-threatening situations, inclement weather, bomb threats, and disaster situations.
  • Provides crowd control and demonstrates knowledge of DNV, General Safety, and Job-Specific Safety functions.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in security, military, or corrections.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) eligibility criteria.
  • Must obtain Security Level 2 Certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Valid Texas Class C driver’s license required.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to use a personal computer, two-way radio, and telephone.
  • Must be able to qualify for Texas Motor Vehicle Insurance.
  • Must wear complete Security Officer Uniform.

Physical Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. The individual must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, sit, stoop, reach, lift, see, speak, and hear.
  • Lifting is limited to 35 lbs. for clinical staff and 50 lbs. for non-clinical staff. Use an assisted-lift device or get assistance for lifts exceeding these limits.

  • Internet/Cell Phone/Landline use is permitted on post for business purposes only.
  • Lock PC when departing post for safety and privacy.
  • Review emails, BOLO, and Pass-on as part of daily activity to ensure awareness of pertinent information.
