About the Role
The Security Officer I maintains a safe, secure, and peaceful environment for patients, visitors, and employees, and protects hospital buildings, assets, and premises.
Responsibilities
- Protect staff, patients, and visitors from violent encounters involving irate patients, visitors, or staff.
- Patrol hospital buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and illegal entry.
- Check cars for parking authorization decals and determine if vehicles are parked in restricted areas (e.g., near fire hydrants, driveways, ambulance entrances, or reserved parking spaces); issue parking violations as appropriate.
- Periodically tour buildings and grounds to examine doors, windows, and gates for security and tampering.
- Question unauthorized persons and route or detain them as needed.
- Contact Chesapeake Police Department for assistance (911 or 382-6161).
- Report unsafe conditions (e.g., malfunctions of heating, plumbing, or electrical systems) to Facilities staff; on weekends and holidays, contact the Nursing Supervisor.
- Maintain constant contact with the PBX operator and other Security staff via portable radio.
- Write and complete case reports regarding incidents on CRMC property when necessary.
- Respond to all alarms and service requests, investigating disturbances in a timely manner.
- Diffuse crisis situations using communication and security techniques for patients, visitors, and staff exhibiting extreme or atypical behavior.
- Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services.
- Demonstrate commitment to flexible work scheduling to ensure patient care.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- One (1) or more years’ prior experience as a Law Enforcement Officer, Deputy Sheriff, Military Service, or Security Officer (required).

Reports to: Lead Security Officer, may also receive direction from the Operations Manager or Director of Security.
