About the role
The Security Officer provides services for a variety of large and small business clients where health, safety, and security are the top priority. This position operates in a public environment at the BP Building, BP Energy Center, and surrounding areas with significant traffic from employees, visitors, and customers.
Responsibilities
- Monitors assigned areas visually, electronically, or audibly, including roving inside facilities, patrolling in a vehicle, or other designated locations.
- Ensures safety and compliance in all actions and those of others.
- Verbally de-escalates situations to ensure the safety of employees, customers, and clients.
- Examines doors, windows, and other areas to confirm security.
- Reports and records property damage, unusual occurrences, and other incidents following company policies.
- Warns or apprehends violators of rules.
- Notifies on-site individuals of visitors.
- Assists in responding to emergencies or disasters, including fire safety and active shooter protocols.
- May perform routine input or monitoring of safety and life-support computer programs.
- May issue and record ID badges.
- Checks heating, lighting, sprinkler, security, ventilation, and fire systems for operational status.
- Notifies supervisors if safety or sanitation standards are not met.
- Performs other duties pertinent to the department’s success as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- At least two (2) years of security, law enforcement, or military experience.
- Valid Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to qualify under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.
- Must obtain and pay for an Alaska Guard License ($97.00 fee) prior to starting work.
- Basic technical and document writing skills.
- Must have or be able to obtain CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Ability to work as part of a team and cooperate with employees, customers, and clients.
- Ability to make decisions independently with little to no supervision.
- Must be able to stand for 12-hour shifts as part of a scheduled rotation.
- Must speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.
- Must adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set by the company and client.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
- Environment: Indoor and outdoor, frequently exposed to arctic conditions.
- Noise level: Moderate to loud.
- Physical demands: Constant standing, walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, using hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.
- Must be able to lift and move up to 50 lbs.
- Schedule: Rotational two weeks on / two weeks off with 12-hour shifts.
